After drawing a bye for the initial round of the Class 1, District 8, varsity tennis championship tournament on Monday, Mexico hosted Moberly for a round two matchup on Tuesday and won 6-3.

The Lady Bulldogs now advance to the district title game on Thursday against host Palmyra, which defeated Kirksville 5-0 in the second round. Prior to that in the first round on Sept. 25 both Moberly and Kirksville bested Father Tolton and Fulton 5-0, respectively.

"It feels really good. They girls played very well against a good team, so it was really nice to get a win in," said assistant coach Sarah Olson. "(On Thursday) I think we have to go out and try as hard as we did (on Tuesday)."

This meet began with Doubles play and the first match to end featured Mexico's Jennifer Jacobi/Becca Kristofferson beating Brianna Holder/Morgan McCall 8-5 at No. 3. The Lady Bulldogs didn't faire nearly as well at the other positions, though, as Grace Wortmann/Sophie McKeown fell 7-9 at No. 1 to Moberly's Molly Greene/Bailey Lewellen and at No. 2 Julie Rothermich/Hannah Rogers were downed 7-9 by McKenzie Wesloh/Madeline Meystrick.

Single play was another story all together and was highlighted for the Lady Bulldogs by Wortmann winning, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 against Greene, at No. 2 McKeown claimed a, 6-1, 6-0, victory over Lewellen and Rothermuch came out on top, 6-2, 6-4, against Wesloh at No. 3. Even though Rogers did drop the No. 4 bout for Mexico, 0-6, 0-6, to Meystrik, at No. 5 Jacobi came in and knocked out Holder, 6-1, 3-6, 6-0, and Kristofferson topped McCall, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 6.

The Lady Bulldogs compete at the Class 1 individual districts on Saturday at Truman State in Kirksville.

"I think we should have several athletes who will move on to sectionals," Olson. "As long as they're doing there best and working hard it could happen."
