Soft Surroundings was the recipient of the Commerce and Industry award which was presented Tuesday night at the 33rd annual Commerce and Industry Award banquet. The banquet held at Steinman Banquet Hall, is sponsored by the Mexico Area Chamber of Commerce and the city of Mexico.

Robby Miller, president of the Mexico Area Chamber of Commerce served as emcee. He also presented the award to Laura Barrett, senior vice president of operations for Soft Surroundings.

Barrett gave a brief history of the company stating in 1997 ground was broken on the original 300,000 square foot building at 4655 East Liberty. In 2016 ground was broken for another addition and it opened this year. This facility will fulfill customer orders to all 50 states as well as Canada.

Barrett said the company likes the city and are happy to be here. "We have been in Mexico for many years, and we could not imagine being anywhere else, she said.

Barrett was also present proclamations from the Missouri Senate and the city.

Mayor Chris Miller said it was a good night to honor Soft Surroundings and declared October 3, 2017 as Soft Surroundings Day.

Also during the evening, the E. Warner Williams Business Service Award for general excellence in business was presented to Dene Myers Designs. Myers appreciative of the award had this to say, "Thanks to all of my friends and customers who let me do what I love to do."

The award was presented by Bill and Tim Williams, sons of E. Warner Williams.

The other nominees for the Excellence in Business Award were Merle Norman Cosmetics & Grifts, third quarter 2016; Martha Rose Gifts & Home Decor, first quarter 2017; and Meeks, second quarter 2017.

In his closing statements Robby Miller thanked Soft Surroundings for being in Mexico. "This is a wonderful community and workforce like yours allows us to grow."

Prior to the meal Dr. Ayanna Shivers gave the invocation.
