While it would be completely true to say that Class 1, District 7, was especially hard on the Community R-6 and Wellsville-Middletown varsity softball teams, the one area squad that was able to keep its head above water in this draw was Van-Far.

What that meant for the Lady Indians was, after drawing a bye for round one on Wednesday, the team began the postseason in the district semifinals on Thursday against Eastern Missouri Conference rival Silex, 15-8 overall, in a game that came down to the very end before Van-Far could edge out a 4-3 victory.

“The key to his winning last night was good defense never giving up and aggressive base running,” said coach Kelly Bprchert. “Jayle Jennings went 3-for-4, Makayla McAfee scored the go ahead run in the bottom of the sixth and Jordan Garner and Alex Connaway came up big defensively in the top of the seventh.”

Prior to that in the opening round of this district on Oct. 4 the Lady Tigers, 4-14 overall, were eliminated by Silex 13-0 and the Lady Trojans, 8-14 overall, fell to New Haven, 8-13 overall. In the other district semifinal on Thursday Clopton ousted host New Haven 11-1. That set up the district title game between Van-Far and Clopton on Saturday after we went to press.
