Domination isn't a term often used when describing a prep sports contest, yet sometimes it tells a tale more appropriately than any other phrase or saying ever could.
For the Montgomery County varsity girls basketball team at Wright City in Eastern Missouri Conference competition on Tuesday the name of the game was defense and they played it well. So well, in fact, the Lady Wildcats were leading 13-0 at the end of the first quarter and 31-2 at halftime to set the stage for taking a 62-9 victory.
"I was proud of the way our girls played tonight. We played hard and really defended well," said head coach Joe Basinger. "Our focus going into the game was our half-court man defense. I didn't feel like we had been doing a good job of getting to our rotations. Tonight I thought we did that really well. Offensively we were extremely balanced again. Everyone that played scored, so that is always nice to see."
One reason Montgomery County also went up 52-7 at the end of the third was that Anna Henke and Paige Oden had 11 points each, Hannah Prior scored nine and Renee Finke and Haeley Johnson increased this bounty with six points each. Makenna Meyer also made a five point contribution, Gretchon Ecron and Anna Ellul both had four points and charting two points apiece were Brooke Oden, Hailey Hill and Taylor Flake.
The Lady Wildcats, 6-3 overall, 3-0 EMO, played Central Lee at the Rumble onn the River Shootout on Friday in Quicy, Il.
