Because the Mexico varsity girls basketball team is about to dive head first into the heart of its North Central Missouri Conference schedule, head coach Ed Costley wouldn't mind fine tuning a thing or two as him team finishes the Macon Tournament.
That includes Jan. 23 at Moberly, Jan. 26 at Boonville and Feb. 2 at Marshall, but first the Lady Bulldogs had to play Brookfield at Macon on Jan. 18 and that game began extremely well as the squad outscored the opposition 24-8 in the first quarter and 19-5 in the second to go up 43-13 at the half. Thanks to 13 points and three rebounds by Logan Blevins for the game Mexico didn't have to do much after that and basically played an even second half on its way to defeating Brookfield 62-33.
"We had a good shooting night in first half. We went through some offensive breakdowns in practice Wednesday to find some sharpness and purpose in what we do," Ed Costley said. "I was pleased to see how we transferred that from practice to the game, which can be one of the difficult task for any team.
Blevins had steady game on the offensive end early, forcing Brookfield to go a zone defense."
Proving just as valuable for the Lady Bulldogs with 12 points, three rebounds, two steals and one assist was Raigan Playter, pulling down 10 boards and 11 points was Reghan Smith and Adria Costley added eight points, eight assists, two rebounds and two steals. Taylor Sherrow also had seven points, four boards and a steal, Rachel Kristoferson put up two points, one steal and one rebound and Chloe Sims gave a two point performance.
"Offensively. we were balanced and we had girls come off bench and give good minutes when we needed them. Raigan Playter did a good job of leading us in second half and played a very efficient game for us," said Ed Costley. "Adria went out early in third and didn't return in game and Playter stepped in and used her experience. Aaryn Sampo and Smith were solid getting some good rebounds for us."
Mexico is now 7-6 overall and next took the court Saturday against Kirksville.
