With a record of 25-3 overall, the Van-Far varsity boys basketball team came into Wednesday's class 2 sectional game at Hannibal looking like a well tuned Ferrari while Elsberry, with a very workman-like record of 14-13 overall, simply didn't.
Once the first quarter ended with Van-Far leading 14-13, those appearances proved to be anything but misleading as Josh Hodde hit a field goal and Caden McMorris hit a pair of three pointers, and the race was on. While Elsberry did its' best to keep up, Van-Far was leading 33-19 at halftime and 46-30 at the end of the third quarter before finally coming out ahead 61-39.
One of the keys to Van-Far taking over this game was that in the second leading 24-19 Caden Wilburn hit from beyond the three point line. He then did it again followed by a field goal and a free throw by Hodde to end the quarter up by 14.
The fourth featured four points from the floor for Van-Far from Lathyn McMorris, but everything else on offense came from the free throw line. That included Wilburn going 6-for-6 from the charity stripe, Trey Miller was 3-for-4 and Hodde hit 1-of-2.
Van-Far next play Saturday at Moberly Area Community College at 2:45 p.m. against Milan, 28-3 overall.
