At the Missouri Military Academy part of the experience is learning to adapt to an ever-changing environment that includes an incredibly international student body and wrestling and soccer programs that have both had three different head coaches over the course of the last three seasons.

While that system of self reliance is designed to force cadets to either step up for one another or place the brundt of any burden squarely on their own shoulders, the one constant in that sea of chaos has been MMA tennis coach Michael Pemberton. To his credit, Pemberton isn't shy about taking full advantage of the fact the Fighting Colonels have a complete indoor tennis center, though. Instead, he fully utilizes everything at his disposal, and on a campus with one, small weight room, creativity is often king.

On Wednesday at home MMA finally got to host its first meet of the year against Helias, and even though the squad even had enough guys to field a full lineup and an exhibition match, the Fighting Colonels still were unable to score a point in doubles play on their way to losing 12-0.

"It was great to play our first match of the season. I thought we played well against a very good team from Helias Catholic HS," said Peemberton. "In singles, I was especially pleased with the play of our number one player, Griffin Henry. After losing the first set, he battled back and played a great second set. Unfortunately, the ball didn't bounce his way during the third set tiebreaker. As a team, we will continue to practice and improve. Overall, I was proud of our effort and good sportsmanship."
