Even though most courts, fields and courses were out of commission last Thursday, this gave the grounds crew at the Centralia Country Club the chance to show, once again, that opportunity and attitude can go a long way.
This, in turn, did allow, the Centralia varsity boys golf team to host a quad meet that also feaatured Mexico and Russellville that day, March 29, but it was Kirksville who then seized the opportunity and ran with it by scoring 177 as a team to come in first. Coming in second was the host Panthers with 184, the Bulldogs were third at 201 and Russellville grabbed the final spot at 232.
Medaling for this event was Centralia's Tanner Brandow with a 38 that teammate Wes Redington complimented with a 46. Carson Flick also supported the cause by posting a 47 for the Panthers, Cameron Logsdon charted a 53 and taking a 56 for this event was Nathan Greene.
Leading the charge for the Bulldogs was Tyler Spargo with a 49, Gage Gilmore was hot on his heels with a 48 and Chris Dubbert and Mason Carver both had a 53's. Nick Hueman was good for a 60, as well.
Kirksville's greatest weapon was Nick Williams, who was the runner-up to Brandow as the individual medalist wiyh a 42 while Vin Krieghauser and Andrew Nothdurft each had 43's.
Russellville's low scorer was Trenton Thompson with a 49.
In a North Central Missouri Conference matchup that got moved to Boonville because Arthur Hill in Mexico didn't even open on Wednesday because of all the rain that occurred the night before, the Bulldogs lost to the Pirates 166-210 despite Dubbert carding a 49. Spargo also kept it low with a 52, Gilmore shot a 53 and Carver and Epperson rounded things out at 56 and 64, respectively.
"Overall our varsity team improved their team score by eight strokes," said Mexico coach Dwight Loyd. "We have a group of guys who are somewhat new to the game of golf, so the more we can play the more we can improve. We are getting better everyday, but we need to keep working hard. Some decent weather would be nice as well."
The Mexico JV team also was defeated on March 28 by Boonville 210-241 as David Koons posted a 51, Quin Leverett had a 62 and Jackson Unger came in at 63. Tyler Quinlan also laid down a 65 and Mason Lower put up a 69.
The Bulldogs next take the course on April 5 at Hail Ridge for the Boonville Invitational and on April 6 the team has a league matchup at Marshall.
Centralia is at Tanglewood CC to face North Callaway and Harrisburg on April 6 at 4 p.m.
