Recently the Community R-6 varsity baseball team had one last item on its to-do list and that was to finish the 2018 regular season at home on Monday against Elsberry in Eastern Missouri Conference action.
Within that goal it would've been nice to win their first league game or score double-digit runs or maybe even hit a homerun that landed just inside of Boone County, but whatever the case, the Trojans just wanted to have the kind of outing they could be proud of prior to their upcoming playoff matchup. So when the squad was able to take a 1-0 lead on the Indians in the second inning, CR-6 appeared to be exactly where it wanted to be.
But, when Stephen Boedeker got on base in the very next at-bat for Elsberry on a dropped third strike and Josh Jurkowski drove him home with a second pitch single, that led to two-run rallys in the third and fifth followed by an insurance run in the seventh to defeat the Trojans 5-1.
Drawing a walk and scoring for CR-6 was Landen Wright and Justin Duenke was 2-for-3. On the mound it was Matt Gastler who got the start for the Trojans, allowing two runs in three innings on two hits with with eight strikeouts. Nate Gastler then releived him and got pinned with the loss by giving up three runs on two hits with four strikeouts in four innings pitched.
For Elsberry Mike Kelly earned the win on the mound by holding CR-6 to one run on two hits in four innings. Jurkowksi and Nick Stone then came out of the bullpen to pitch the rest of the game for the Indians and Boedeker went 2-for-3 at the plate.
