No more Fighting Colonels

After starting its varsity football campaign against the Missouri Military Academy the past several years, Van-Far team will begin the regular season on Aug. 24 at home at 7 p.m. against Bunker Hill (Il). Last weekend the squad was at the Monroe City Jamboree and on Aug. 31 the Indians will host Louisiana.

 

Indians make their mark

Last Friday the Van-Far varsity football team, which still co-op's with Community R-6 despite the fact the Trojans left the Eastern Missouri Conference in favor of the Capitol Activities Conference, competed at the Monroe City Jamboree

 

Adjusting time schedule

Because of possible high temperatures on Saturday afternoon, times for the Mexico Invitational Cross Country Meet have been moved up from 9 a.m. starting with the coaches meeting at 8:15 a.m. followed by the JV race at 8:25 a.m. and the varsity girls at 9:10 a.m. Finally, the boys varsity race will commence at 9:45 a.m. and the event takes place at Green Estate Parks in Mexico. Flag Football 2018

Registration to participate in Mexico YMCA Flag Football 2018 for boys and girls in kindergarden through third grade ends Aug. 26. Cost is $35 for members, $45 for non-members and focus is on teamwork in a positive, structured environment. Kids will learn to run routes, throw, catch and other parts of the game that will help deveop skill sets such as hand-eye coordination, self esteem and leadership. The future is coming

According to a post on Facebook by KXEO on Aug. 21, "The Mexico Board of Education has approved the creation of a softball team at Mexico Middle School to begin in the 2019 school year."

 

Organized league, competitive teams

The deadline to register for the Mexico Area Family YMCA Boys Basketball League is Oct. 22, 2018. Games will be played from Nov. 5 to Dec. 11 at 6, 7 and 8 p.m. at 1127 Adams St., Mexico, Mo., 65265. Registration is by team,. not by individual, cost is $200 for a six game schedule and divisions are third and fourth graders and fifth and sixth graders. Divisions will be limited to six squads each, initial six teams to register is what league will consist of and there are no gate fees.
