Vandalia man arrested for manslaughter; other charges

On Sunday the Missouri Highway Patrol arrested Charles David Howdeshell, 50, of Vandalia for manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, assault, unlawful use of a weapon, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, careless and imprudent driving, and a seatbelt violation. Howdeshell remains in jail without bond.
Howdeshell was involved in an accident Sunday on Highway 54 west of Route A in Audrain County and according to the highway patrol report Howdeshell attempted to pass a vehicle causing it to travel in the opposite lane and was struck head-on by another vehicle. One person died in the accident; five received serious injuries; and two received moderate injuries. Howdeshell was not injured in the accident.
