The 2010 Mexico High School commencement ceremonies began with a performance by the Dixie Gray Concert Band, playing the traditional processional while the seniors walked across the field to their seats at Hawthorne Heights.
The senior Dixie Gray Band members played the “Star Spangled Banner” and the Dixie Gray Band and senior band members played “Waterdance.”
MHS Principal Melanie Richter introduced the school board members and faculty on the platform stage. Hailey Admire, senior class president, presented Senior Class Honored Diplomas to Melanie Richter and Lou Mongler.
There were 16 valedictorians in the 2010 senior class of 197 students – Ross DeLong, Alex Finck, Jane Gonzalez-Meyer, Taylor Hays, Cody Heyveld, Loren Littrell, Kurt Loyd, Delaney McNeil, Brandon Morgan, Sarah Ogar, Drew Potucek, Elliott Rice, Heather Rogers, Robert Seigfreid, Vincent Talley and Kaitlyn Woods. Dennis Hobbs was the class salutatorian.
Eight of the valedictorians chose to present speeches to the class during the ceremonies.
Two students, JaNece Gould and Weston Hitchcock, who competed in open tryouts, were selected to present speeches Monday night. Gould’s topic was “The Next Step.” She ended her speech saying, “High school has been one long journey for us. ... Most of us would agree that the days we spent in high school were certainly the best days of our lives. It was in school that we made our first friends, competed to excel, hoped for places in the sports teams, and learned our first lessons about life. Your schooling may be over, but remember, your education still continues. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said ‘do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.’”
Hitchcock’s topic was “The End of This Journey.” After reminiscing about the class of 2010 students’ past four years in high school he concluded, “I know that the next few years of our lives will provide adventure and learning for us all. Although life has, and will continue to be a journey of highs and lows, the only thing I want you all to know is that there is a purpose to all of life’s obstacles and highlights. Let us add to the legacy of this place and be forever proud ... as members of the Mexico High School Class of 2010. Good luck.”
Additional addresses and recognitions were made Monday night including the presentation of an honorary diploma to Dr. James A. Scott in appreciation of his dedication to the Mexico Public School system and its students and the distinguished alumnus award to Linda C. Hensley for her outstanding commitment to the community of Mexico and dedication to the students of the Mexico Public School system.
Mexico School Board President Kenneth Hoover addressed the seniors about the chapters in their lives – beginning with kindergarten, then leaving elementary school for the junior high, beginning another chapter leaving the junior high to the high school, each time not knowing what to expect or what was going to happen. “Another chapter is opening in your book tomorrow,” he said. He encouraged the class members to stay the course, work hard and follow their dreams.
Following the various speeches and acknowledgements, school board members presented diplomas to each graduate attending.
The commencement ceremonies concluded with the Dixie Gray Band performing the recessional while the graduates paraded around the field then threw their caps into the air.
Fireworks lit the sky while family and friends congratulated the graduates.
