Davis H. Hart Career Center honored the best of the best Wednesday night at the annual awards ceremony held in Emmons Hall at Mexico High School.
The evening was topped off with the presentation of the 2010 Davis H. Hart Award presented by Linda Miedler, daughter of Davis Hart. This year's recipient was Paige George, Hallsville, a cosmetology student at HCC.
The Davis H. Hart award is named for Hart who was a visionary for career and technical education in the Mexico School District. He was instrumental in bringing a vocational technical school to Mexico and the surrounding areas. In 1968, Mexico Area Vocational Technical School was opened. This award has been given each year since 1977 to announce the student who best represents the high standards in career technical education. Criteria to receive this award includes attendance rate of 95 percent or higher, GPA of 3.0 or higher, master 80 percent of competency work in the student's study program, must be selected as Outstanding Student in his or her program, and participate in an interview process. George received a $500 scholarship as the recipient of the award.
For the second time, the Student in Excellence award was presented to two students who also met the criteria of the Davis H. Hart award and showed excellence in his/her program. Students receiving this award and a $350 scholarship each were: Tyler Bennett from North Callaway High School and Faith Cooper, Mexico High School. Other nominees for the Davis H. Hart Award were Scott Teson, Tim Mefford and Kelley Fry.
Randall Gooch, director of HCC, welcomed parents, family and friends.
Nearly 130 seniors were eligible for recognition. "They (the students) will be recognized for their successes while attending Hart Career Center," stated Gooch. "While here they each acquired and developed skills that will prepare them for the next step," he added. For some it will be the world of work, for some it will be community or technical college and some will go to a four-year university or college.
Gooch also introduced the staff and faculty. "I would be remiss if I would not honor the faculty at Davis H. Hart Career Center for their contribution they have played in educating the students."
Kevin Freeman, assistant superintendent of Mexico School District, also addressed the students and audience. "It is always a pleasure to recognize our students who do well and recognize the students from all our sending schools," stated Freeman. He echoed Gooch's remarks about the faculty and staff in appreciation for their work. He also thanked the parents, guardians and anyone who supports the students.
Each sending school was represented by staff members or principals including: Centralia, Community R-6, Fulton, Hallsville, Montgomery County, North Callaway, Paris, Van-Far, and Wellsville-Middletown.
