Mexico, Mo. -

Red Hot 'N Great is an apt description for the city of Farber's Summer Fun Fest 2008, which will be held August 1 and 2 at Sportsman Park in the eastern Audrain County community. That slogan is being used to advertise the festival, which kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday with the Little Mr. and Miss Farber contest, and concludes with a concert beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday by the Broken Rules band, playing under the pavilion at the park.

"There is something here for everybody," stated Ruth Williams, a member of the event planning committee. "We try and address all the different age groups when we put up the schedule, and we try and keep it economical for families to come and have a good time. It's fun for the family, but the end result is that it also benefits the community."

Williams stated general admission to the Summer Fun Fest is free-of-charge, but noted all profits made during the two-day event - such as revenue from games and food sales - are returned to the community. "It's divided three ways between the fire department, the Lions Club, and the community betterment organization, all which then work on community projects," stated the organizer, who likewise cited contributions received from businesses and individuals that help pay for the annual event. "Some of the projects, for example, are the ballfield improvement. The Lions Club is really big in making improvements to the ballfield, among other community projects. In the past, the fire department built the building, but now they're moving on towards equipment and training. And community betterment - past projects are things like funding the library building, and then on-going improvements, like the library and the park."

Additional events scheduled for August 1 include Missouri Stock Antique-Classic Tractor Puller's Association Tractor Pull, ice cream social, and lucky party. Also, the food stand is scheduled to open at 6:30 p.m. that day.

Planned activities for August 2 include 5k Relay For Life walk/run, parade, toy scramble, baby show, volleyball tournament, kiddie carnival, horseshoe tournament, political candidates forum, bike rodeo, Old West shootout, carbon copy look-alike contest, pedal tractor pull, trivia tournament, tricycle races, washer tournament, strong man contest, egg toss, water balloon toss, fish fry supper, swap meet, car cruise-in, pinewood derby races, garden tractor pull, and - in the city park - Farber flea market, craft fair and farmer's market. Also, all-day  activities include food stand, kids train rides, and cake and junk food walk.
