JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – Missouri senators plan to hold hearings this summer to determine if rule changes are needed for handling negotiations over proposed legislation.
The negotiations, called conference committees, are conducted between House members and senators to work out differences in versions of bills approved by each chamber.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported today that the hearings are in response to one senator trying to insert a new provision into a conference committee bill that dealt with local sales taxes.
Typically, conference committees make no major changes to bills unless the House and Senate each approve.
Lawmakers eventually dropped the proposed sales tax provision during the conference committee.
Sen. Chuck Purgason, a Republican of Caulfield, will lead the hearings. He says he wants to ensure that the Legislature is transparent.
