ESSEX, Mo. (AP) – A major southeast Missouri highway has reopened after a multi-vehicle crash that sent several people to hospitals.
The pileup happened around noon Monday on eastbound U.S. 60 near the Stoddard County town of Essex. Heavy smoke from a farmer's fire was hanging over the highway at the time.
The eastbound lanes were reopened about six hours later.
KFVS-TV reports 15 vehicles were involved and 16 people were hurt. At least three were flown to hospitals in Cape Girardeau and Memphis, Tenn. Others were taken to hospitals by ambulance.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol says a farmer had been burning trash and accidentally caught a field on fire. Two or three cars collided in the heavy smoke and were hit by a tractor-trailer. Several other vehicles then crashed in a chain collision.
