Wanda C. Smith, age 86 of Mexico passed away Thursday evening, May 31st 2018 at Pin Oaks Living Center in Mexico where she had been a resident for the past 3 months.
Memorial Services will be held at 1:30 pm on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at the First Presbyterian Church in Mexico. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. A private interment will be held in the columbarium at the church.
Wanda was born on December 15,1931 on the family farm near Holiday Missouri. She was the second daughter of Martha (Houck) and Howard H. Curtright.
On June 15, 1952 she married Charles (Don) Smith in Paris Missouri. He preceded her in death on April 28, 2011.
Wanda worked for five years at A.P. Green Company and then spent the next 12 years as a stay-at-home mom before becoming a teacher. She received her elementary teaching degree from the University of Missouri - Columbia. Wanda taught at several rural schools and then spent the rest of her twenty plus years in her teaching career as a 4th grade teacher at Eugene Field School in Mexico. Her family and the education of children were her biggest passions. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for over 60 years and served on several committees, as a teacher, and as a deacon. Wanda volunteered for many years in the Audrain Medical Auxiliary. She loved to read and sew in her spare time.
She is survived by two daughters Dianne (Pat) Maguire of Mexico, MO and Donna (Steve) Velsor of Alton, IL; five grandchildren: Jennifer (Arif Kamal) Maguire of Chapel Hill, NC, Matthew (Crystal) Maguire of Mexico, MO, Andrew Velsor of Alton IL, Sarah Velsor of Denton, TX, and David Velsor of Herrin, IL. She also leaves two great-grandchildren and two step great-granddaughters.
Along with her husband and her parents her only sister Dollie Powers preceded her in death.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that any memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Mexico, MO.
