Thomas E. “Tom” Usnick, formerly of Mexico dies

Thomas E. “Tom” Usnick, 82, of Slater, formerly of Mexico, died Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at the Fitzgibbon Hospital in Marshall.
Memorial services will be Saturday, August 28, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Slater United Methodist Church. Pastor Matt Arni will officiate. Bethany Weiker, organist, will accompany Matt Arni as he sings "It is Well With My Soul" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Burial will be at a later date in the Slater City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. Saturday until the time of the services at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Church, Alzheimer's Association, or Slater Medical Clinic Fund in care of Weiker Funeral Home in Slater.
Born May 11, 1928 in Fairmount, he was the son of the late Frank M. and Eudora Holmes Usnick. On July 3, 1948 in Kansas City, Kan., he married Barbara Olson, and she survives of the home.
Also surviving are three sons, Tommy Usnick, Jr. and his wife Debbie of Mexico, Mo., Steven Usnick and his wife Heather of Farley, Mo., and Jeff Usnick and his wife Brecket of Ionia, Mo.; a daughter, Susan Bishop and her husband Keith of Marshall; five grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Garry L. Usnick of Sun City, Calif., and Frank M. Usnick, Jr. of Albuquerque, N.M.; and a sister, Marion Hawkins of Peculiar, Mo. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Usnick and Harley Usnick; and two sisters, Frances Lopez and Carmen Roberts.
Mr. Usnick was a member of the Slater United Methodist Church, where he had served as a Trustee, Usher and member of the Administrative Board. He was a member of the United Methodist Men.  He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, and a member of the American Legion Post No. 78 in Slater. He was a member of the Cambridge Masonic Lodge No. 63, A.F. & A.M. in Slater. He was past-President of the Railroad Superintendent's Association in Kansas City. He attended North East High School and Railroad Communications School in Kansas City. He worked for the G.M.&O. Railroad, and later the Illinois Central & Gulf Railroad for 38 years, retiring as Trainmaster. He had lived in Slater since 1978, previously living in Kansas City and Mexico, Mo.
