Mary Evelyn O’Brien
Mary Evelyn O’Brien, 88, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008. Miss O’Brien, only child of John P. and Mabel Kilgore O’Brien, was born on Nov. 12, 1919, 12 miles northwest of Mexico, in Audrain County, on the O’Brien farm owned by her parents, and formerly owned by Michael J. and Annie Murphy O’Brien, her grandparents. Mary Evelyn’s maternal grandparents were John R. and Julia Duggan Kilgore.
Mary Evelyn attended the Fox School, grades one through eight, and attended St. Brendan Parochial High School, graduating in 1937. She then attended Chillicothe Business School for six months and subsequently was hired at the County Welfare office in Mexico, working there for approximately three years. In 1941, she became a secretary at Mexico Savings Bank (now Commerce Bank). She was elected assistant cashier in August of 1971, and became the first female officer in the history of Commerce Bank. Mary Evelyn was elected assistant vice president in January of 1973 and at the time of her retirement she was the Vice President in charge of Real Estate Loans. She retired on May 26, 1982 after 41 years of service.
During her business career she was active in various community affairs and drives and St. Brendan Church. She was a charter member of Altrusa Club of Mexico, a women’s service organization, having served as an officer at two different times. She also served as secretary of the Audrain County Historical Society and was a member of the Mexico Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors. Her hobbies were gardening and golf.
Survivors include several cousins, Richard O’Brien of Louisville, Ky. and Rosemary Lorang of Commerce City, Colo. and William O’Brien of Easton, Colo. and a host of Mexico friends and co-workers from her years in banking.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Brendan Catholic Church with Fr. John Schmitz officiating. A rosary will be said at 9:30 a.m. before the Mass. Burial will be in St. Brendan Cemetery.
At her request, memorials may be made to Audrain County Historical Society, the Children’s Therapy and Early Education Center (formerly the CP School) or for masses in care of St. Brendan Catholic Church.

Carolyn Gooch
Carolyn Marie Gooch, 81 of Mexico, died at 3:30 a.m. on Oct. 26, 2008 at Golden Living Center - Pin Oaks. There will be no services at this time.
Carolyn was born Nov. 9, 1926 in Mexico to Carroll and Jessie (Fike) Jenkins. She married Robert Gooch on Oct. 1, 1948 in Bowling Green. He preceded her in death on Oct. 10, 2007.
Mrs. Gooch was a secretary for A.P. Green for many years.
Survivors include one daughter, Gail Allbritton; two grandchildren, Christina Valenti and Chase Allbritton, all of Coral Springs, Fla.
Memorials may be made to the National Stroke Association or Community Hospice.

Curtis L. Holland
Curtis Lee Holland, age 67, of Fulton, passed away Friday, October 24, 2008, at the Callaway Community Hospital in Fulton. He was born May 18, 1941 in Callaway County, a son of the late Fay “Heavy” Holland and Sally McKinney Davidson of Fulton. On February 16, 1963, he was united in marriage to Sharon Levingston who survives at their home.
In addition to his mother and wife, he will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by, one son, Greg Holland of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; two daughters; Kelly Byler and her husband, Jeff, and Karrie Brittain of Fulton; three grandchildren, Cara and Zach Byler and Austin Brittain, all of Fulton; two brothers, Kenneth Holland of Shelbina and Hallie Holland of Millersburg; two sisters, Nina Long and her husband Gene of Bowling Green and Patsy Maddox and her husband, Larry of Fulton; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins and many dear friends.
His father and stepfather, Charlie Davidson, preceded him in death.
Curtis retired after 32 years with Harbison Walker Refactories in Fulton. He also worked for Baumgartner’s Furniture in Auxvasse, for many years. He was a member of the Church of God Holiness in Fulton, where he served as Sunday School Youth Superintendent for many years. He was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather and brother. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. He loved baking, especially bread, refinishing furniture, he enjoyed playing the piano, and making people laugh, always finding time to help others.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 29, at the Church of God Holiness in Fulton, with Reverend Travis Sayler and Reverend Bobby Clouse officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 28, 2008, from 5-8 p.m. at Maupin Funeral Home in Fulton. Interment will be held at the Callaway Memorial Gardens in Fulton. Mildred S. Loyd
Mildred S. Loyd, 89 of Mexico, died on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008 at Pin Oaks Nursing Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Arnold Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Ostrom officiating. Visitation is this evening from 5-7 at the funeral home. Burial at East Lawn Memorial Park.
Mildred was born in Audrain County on June 30, 1919, the daughter of George and Julia A. (Beasley) Schremp. On Aug. 17, 1940, she married C.T. Loyd in Curryville. He preceded her in death on May 7, 1994.
She was a lifetime member of Union Baptist Church. She had been a homemaker and worked at the shoe factory before going back to school in 1968 and earning her LPN degree. She then worked for Audrain Medical Center for 18 years.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Nancy Loyd, of Mexico; and two grandchildren, John Loyd and Rachel, both of Mexico. She is also survived by three sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Bruce Loyd; two brothers, Homer and Howard Schremp; two sisters, Mabel Bruckerhoff and Selma Berry; and an infant brother.

Charlotte E. Shipman
Charlotte E. Shipman, 63 of Middletown, died at 7:32 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, 2008 at the Pike County Memorial Hospital in Louisiana.
Charlotte Elizabeth Shipman was born July 16, 1945 in St. Charles to Elmer Witte and Agatha Fluecht Witte. Charlotte graduated from Duchesne High School in St. Charles. Soon after high school, she married Frank Zerjav, who preceded her in death. On Feb. 6, 1970 Charlotte married Dennis Shipman at St. Robert’s Catholic Church in St. Charles. Charlotte was a deputy with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department for 12 years, including five years as jail administrator. She also worked at Elmore Ford and Joe’s Bakery in Montgomery City and at Ben’s Auto Body Shop in Mexico. Charlotte was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Martinsburg; was a member of the Harmony Club in Middletown; President of the Boonedockers Camping Club; and enjoyed quilting, camping, reading and gardening. Charlotte loved spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and visiting with friends.
Mrs. Shipman is survived by her husband, Dennis “Doc” Shipman of Middletown; six children, Tim Shipman and wife, Linda, of Chesapeake Bay, Va.; Jeff Shipman and wife, Mary, of Newport News, Va.; Mike Shipman and Connie Prior of Wellsville; Beth Crews and husband, Tim, of Mexico; Steve Shipman and wife, Lori, of St. Charles; and Stacey Shipman of Columbia; 16 grandchildren, Kyle, Kayla, Nicole, Sam and David Shipman, Hugo Seveik, Abby, Amber and Katie Shipman, Jami Glas, Jenni Fesler, and Matthew Shipman, Alex and Liz Crews, and Alex and Brittany Shipman; two great-grandchildren, Lanie and Chase Fesler; five brothers and sisters, Eugene and Martha Witte, Tom and Mary Boschert, Bob and Joyce Schierding; John and Brenda Witte, all of St. Charles; and Barb and Chris Snyder of Pennsylvania; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Charlotte also loved their dog, Ollie.
Mrs. Shipman was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Agatha Fluecht Witte; husband, Frank Zerjav; and an infant brother, Robert Joseph Witte.
A Funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. today at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Martinsburg. Visitation was held on Sunday, Oct. 26, from 2-7 p.m. at the Schlanker Funeral Home in Montgomery City. A prayer service was held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Schlanker Funeral Home in Montgomery City. The Reverend Greg Oligschlaeger and the Reverend Wayne Boyer officiated and interment was in the Sunrise Memorial Gardens, north of Montgomery City. Pallbearers include her sons and grandsons, Jim, Jeff, Mike, Steve, Kyle and David Shipman.

Gloria Lorrayne (Kelly) Davis
Gloria Lorrayne (Kelly) Davis was born Aug. 28, 1924 in Benton City to Alvin and Emma (Christensen) Kelly. She moved with her parents to Laddonia at an early age and attended elementary and high school in Laddonia.
Mrs. Davis graduated from Northeast Missouri State Teacher’s College in Kirksville with a BS in Music. Later she went back to college to earn her teaching certificate for High School English in Missouri. During her teaching career she taught English, Band and Music in Illinois and Missouri.
In August 1955 she moved to Pacific, Mo., and taught English at Pacific High School (Meramec Valley R6) starting in the 1955/56 school year and continuing there until her retirement in 1975.
She was united in marriage to Verlon W. Davis on March 30, 1961. Mr. Davis was an art teacher at Pacific High School. They enjoyed teaching together and participating in sponsoring many high school events.
Lorrayne was a longtime member of the Pacific United Methodist Church where she served as secretary for 11 years and enjoyed being a member of the Bell Choir and the Sanctuary Choir.
She was a member of the Eastern Star.
Kelly enjoyed crafts - needlepoint, beading, knitting and decorating cakes and taught cake decorating classes at one time from her home.
Lorrayne was a great animal lover and her life would not have been complete without her dachshunds.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Verlon, and her parents, Alvin and Emma.
Funeral services for Mrs. Davis were held Monday, Oct. 13, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Nieburg-Vitt Thiebes Funeral Home with interment in the Laddonia Cemetery. The Rev. Dee Penington officiating.
Memorials are to the Pacific Methodist Church.

PERRY – Thomas Clark Jackson, 81, of Kearney died at 10:25 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008, at Excelsior Springs Medical Center.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. today at Lick Creek Cemetery.
