Vernon “Jake” Ham, 81, of rural Montgomery City, died at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, at the Audrain Medical Center in Mexico.
Vernon Leo Ham was born Feb. 14, 1928 in McKittrick, Mo. to Elton B. Ham and Leona Jones Ham. He graduated from Montgomery City High School in 1946 in Montgomery City, Mo. He worked for A.P. Green in Mexico, Mo., for several years before leaving for the Air Force. Mr. Ham was a Veteran of the United States Air Force, serving from September, 1948 until August, 1952. When he returned from the Air Force he started farming. On Oct. 13, 1956 he married Florence H. Benz in Jefferson City, Mo. Together they farmed many years until they retired. Mr. Ham was the Past President of the Board of Directors of Producers Grain Co., the Association Secretary/Treas-urer of High Point Cemetery for many years; was a member of the Antique Airplane Association; a member of the B-36 Bombers Association; a member of the National Rifle Association; and a member of the American Legion Post 0277. He enjoyed farming, antique airplanes, and was an avid reader. Mr. Ham loved spending time with his family and friends.
Mr. Ham is survived by his wife of over 53 wonderful years, Florence H. Benz Ham of the home; two children, Terry Neal Ham and wife, Deanna, of Florence, Ky. and Lorri Lynn Seidel of St. Thomas, Mo.; two grandchildren, Karinna and Alyssa Seidel of St. Thomas, Mo.; a niece, Zale Chadwick; a nephew, Jerry Chadwick; and numerous friends.
Mr. Ham was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Perry Seidel; and two sisters, Frances Morris and Margie Chadwick.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 29, at the Schlanker Funeral Home in Montgomery City. The Reverend Ed Hankinson will officiate and interment with Military Honors will be in the Montgomery City Cemetery in Montgomery City. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Schlanker Funeral Home in Montgomery City.
Casketbearers include Dennis Benney, Roger Karrenbrock, Tom Benney, Stanley Hemeyer, Richard Ham and Ernie Vichmann. Honorary Casketbearers include Bob River, Wes River, Don Benney, Howard Hinze and David Knoepflein.
