Venton Hays, 86, of Mexico dies

Venton J. Hays, 86 of Mexico died peacefully at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday January 14, 2012 with his family at his side.
A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday January 21, 2012 at Arnold Funeral Home with visitation to be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home on Saturday.
Venton, was born on March 12, 1925 in Vandalia, Mo. to Leslie Venton and Susie (Pew) Hays.  At the age of 17 he enlisted in the Navy and was honorably discharged on February 18th, 1946.  On October 29, 1949 Venton married Geraldine Workes in Mexico, Mo.
Mr. Hays worked at A.P. Green Refractories retiring in 1987 after 40 years of service.  After his retirement he and Gerry enjoyed being “Winter Texans” for many years and met many friends along the way.  He was also an avid Cardinals baseball fan.
In addition to his wife of 62 years, Mr. Hays is survived by a son, Stanley Hays of Mexico; and a daughter, Gay Matthiesen and husband Rick of Columbia; four grandchildren; a brother, Jerry Hays; three sisters, Evelyn Dudley, Doris Mink, and Shirley Jennings.
Venton was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers and sisters.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations to the Mexico Senior Center c/o Arnold Funeral Home 425 S. Jefferson Mexico, MO 65265.
