Nelson “Nellie” Groves, 75 of Thompson, died Friday August 20, 2010 in Audrain County as a result of an automobile accident.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Arnold Funeral Home with burial to follow at Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday from 5-8 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 7:30 at the funeral home.
He was born on May 8, 1935 in Audrain County to Harold William and Ethel Ruth (Allison) Groves.
Nellie was a member of Bethel Methodist Church; the Mexico Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons, the Hebron Lodge No. 354, Mexico Chapter AF&AM Crusade Commandree where he was Past Ement Commander No. 23 Knight Templar, Moolah Shrine Temple of St. Louis, Little Dixie Shrine Club of Mexico, International Col-lectors Club, Sword of Bunker Hill of Columbia, the Eastern Star of Mexico, and the Little Dixie Motorcycle Patrol of Mexico.
Nellie volunteered his cooking talents for many charities and was an expert with a dutch oven.
Mr. Groves married Delores Sumpter on March 6, 1969 at the First Baptist Church in Mexico; she survives of the home.
Along with his wife Delores, Nellie is survived by two step-sons, Bart Acree and wife, Bonnie of Kansas City and Darrell Acree and wife, Sue of Lewisburg, Mo.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Lillian Groves of Macon, Marjorie Maly of Mexico; three brothers, Dale Groves and wife, Roe Ann of Mexico, Richard Groves of Boonville, and Harry Groves and wife, Gloria of Mexico; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Menefee and husband, Kenneth of Russellville; four nephews; 10 nieces; 14 great-nieces; and nine great-nephews.
Mr. Groves was preceded in death by his parents.
