Even though he improved his second-round effort by four strokes, Mexico High School junior Jordan Geeson was unable to improve his standing in the MSHSAA Class 3 golf tournament Tuesday at Riverview Golf Course in Springfield.
After opening with a 93 Monday, putting him in a six-way tie for 109th place, Geeson shot an 89 over his final 18 holes, finishing the 36-hole meet in a tie with Nevada senior Brandon Davis at 182 for 110th among 128 golfers.
Medalist was Westminster Christian Academy sophomore Kevin Bell, who moved up from the second spot at the midway point to take top individual honors with his 74-75/149 total, five over par on the 6,536-yard layout. Runner-up was Duchesne junior Luke Orf at 78-73/151 with the best second-round score; Monday’s leader, Excelsior Springs senior Drew Decker, carded 154 and wound up in a two-way for fifth.
Fulton junior Jason Vann led several individual entries from Mexico’s North Central Missouri Conference with an 83-77/160, good for a four-way share of 25th place. First-round leader Kearney took its first team title by a 628-633 margin over Priory. Pembroke Hill finished third among 11 teams entered with 643.
In the Class 1 meet at Silo Ridge Golf & Country Club in Bolivar, Paris came in sixth among nine teams with sophomore Dakyn Dollens tying for ninth in a field of 120 finishers. The Coyotes improved their total from 379 Monday to 352 Tuesday for a combined score of 731; Dollens shot 80-81/161 to tie Sacred Heart senior Jaron Lucchesi.
Other Paris rounds were sophomore Gavin Ragsdale, 96-85/181, good for a six-way tie for 51st; junior Brent Dye, 98-93/191, good for a four-way tie for 80th; freshman Kable Ragsdale, 105-96/201, good for 104th; freshman Dustin Redmon, 110-93/203, good for a two-way tie for 105th.
Also is Class 1, Van-Far senior Mathew Iburg finished in an eight-way tie for 86th with his 95-98/193. Tipton repeated as the team champion by a 657-686 margin over Lee’s Summit Community Christian.
In Class 2 at Deer Lake Golf Course in Springfield, Ash Grove beat Cameron 636-660 for top team honors, claiming its third title in a row. North Callaway’s Erik Meyer carded 89-84/173 to finish in a 10-way tie for 52nd and fellow senior John Atkinson shot 93-96/189, good for a six-way tie for 101st among 122 finshers.
DISTRICT TENNIS: In the Class 1/District 4 tournament at Hannibal, which finished up Monday, final team scores were Fulton 25.5, Hannibal 25, Kirksville 20.5, Osage 18, Marshall 14, Moberly 9.5, Fort Zumwalt East 9.5, Mexico 7, Missouri Military Academy 6.5, Boonville 6.5. The title was the first ever for the Hornets.
Fulton’s Dennis Sonhi won the singles bracket over teammate Dane Baker, 6-2 in the first set before Baker retired. Kirksville beat Hannibal 6-4, 6-4 for the doubles crown.
