Two former North Central Missouri Conference rivals carried six-game winning streaks into Tuesday night’s varsity basketball action at the Mexico High School sports complex. Seven proved to be a lucky number only for the visitors.
Outscoring the host Bulldogs 32-23 over the middle two quarters, then closing out the non-conference contest with 19 of the game’s final 32 points, the Helias Crusaders took a 57-45 victory back to Jefferson City to improve their record to 12-6 overall and drop Mexico to 14-6.
“They’re a pretty good team, but we had a three-minute stretch   at the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth where we lost the game,” MHS coach Brennan Scanlon said. “We made a couple of mistakes they turned into points and they hit their free throws toward the end.”
A Marcus Bush putback pulled the Bulldogs within 49-42 with less than three minutes remaining and an Austin Reed 3-pointer made it 51-45 with some 75 seconds to go, but Zach Rackers and Danny Feldmann both hit as pair of foul shots to close the door on Mexico.
Feldmann, a 6-foot-8 senior, led all scorers with 20 points. For Mexico, Dillion Shoemaker had 15P, Sam Kelly 9P, Regan Mudd 6P, Reed 5P, Bush 4P, Ta’Juan Williams 2P, Tyus Williams 2P and Colby Willer 2P.
Bush, Reed and Shoemaker also had three assists apiece, Kelly and Bush four rebounds each.
All remaining regular-season dates for the Bulldogs will be league games, starting Friday at home against Kirksville.
MEXICO JV BOYS: In Tuesday’s preliminary matchup, it was Mexico 45, Helias 41 after a 17-9 stretch run for the 7-3 Bulldogs.
The Crusaders enjoyed leads of 14-9, 21-20 and 32-28 at the quarters before Mexico came roaring from behind. Tyus Williams finished with 11P, Dillion Jerichow 9P, Nick Jones 8P and Jae’On Nunnelly 8P for the Bulldogs.
“This was a solid win against a good JV team,” MHS coach Tyler Hudson said. “We trailed the first three quarters, but we were able to get some stops on defense and we executed offensively in the fourth quarter.”
These Bulldogs also will be home Friday against Kirksville, but only after the Mexico JV Tournament is over. Mexico opens play at 7:30 p.m. today against North Callaway; Boonville takes on Fulton to open the two-day event at 6.
AREA HOOPS: Community R-6 girls outpointed host Wellsville-Middletown 18-1 in the initial period Tuesday and needed all that edge to claim a 44-42 EMO win as the Lady Tigers posted 15 of the last 21 points. “We went cold in the second half and couldn’t get to the free throw line, but our defense held up to give us a good road win,” CR6 coach Bob Curtis said.  For the 9-7/2-2 Lady Trojans, Brittni Brandwein netted 11 of her game-high 21P in the first quarter, hitting four 3-pointers overall, while Ashley Curtis pulled down 13R. Bethany Bishop had 11P and Birgit Harrington 10P for 9-10 W-M, which made 11 of 14 foul shots. Two periods of JV play ended CR6 12, Wellsville 6. In a tight varsity boys game, Wellsville pulled out a 40-38 decision over visiting CR6, which led 24-22 at halftime. Kyle Oliver paced the Tigers with 17P, while Chance Evans had 10P and Brian Arens 8P/8R for the 7-8/3-2 Trojans. ... Tuesday at No. 1-ranked Marion County, Paris girls bowed 68-45. “They don’t have any weaknesses,” PHS coach Chris Willingham said. “We handled their pressure well for the most part and played solid defense, but we were lacking in rebounding and at time offensive executiton.” Tessa Henderson scored 12P, Paige Dye 1P and Amanda DeOrnellas 11P for the 9-8 Lady Coyotes. DeOrnellas also had 11R and three blocks. ... In first-round boys action at the Southern Boone Invitational, the host Eagles beat North Callaway 54-48.
