Mexico High School’s junior varsity basketball boys take on Fulton at 7:30 p.m. today for first place in the Mexico JV Tournament.
The 8-3 Bulldogs advanced with Wednesday night’s 49-24 decision over North Callaway at the MHS sports complex. Fulton beat Boonville 50-44 in the other semifinal contest to move to 9-1.
Ahead 13-6 after the opening period, Mexico led the Thunderbirds 28-10 by halftime and 43-19 going into the fourth quarter.
“Our defensive effort was great, but we have to execute and finish better on the offensive end,” MHS coach Tyler Hudson said. “Fulton has a good JV team and we will need to have a good game to keep the JV trophy in Mexico.”
For the Bulldogs, Tyus Williams led the way with 12P, Jae’On Nunnelly followed with 11P and Dillion Jerichow added 9P. Tyler Oberlag was the top scorer for the 10-2 T-Birds with 6P.
NorCal plays Boonville at 6 p.m. today for third place.
Mexico G7 boys: These Bulldogs completed their season Saturday with a 42-36 loss to Moberly in the championship game of the Mexico Middle School Tournament, the A-team finishing with an 8-6 record.
Mexico trailed 14-2 after the first quarter and 22-13 at the half, but battled back to forge a 28-all tie after three periods.
“We dug ourselves a hole early and couldn’t get into an offensive rhythm,” MMS coach Darren Pappas said. “We got down early, but turned it up in the second half of what was a very physical game.”
For the Bulldogs, Tyler Bracht had 12P, Skylar Harrington 10P, Jackson Crow 4P/6R, plus Chance Harper and Cody Creed 3P each.
“Overall, the boys played extremely hard the entire game and never gave up,” Pappas noted. “I am proud of the effort these guys gave the entire season and how we played team-oriented basketball.”

Jordan Gray netted all but two of her season-high 14P in the final period for the 6-12 Ladybirds, who gave up 11 of the second quarter’s 12 points to trail 21-13 at the half.
