Mexico High School basketball girls made sure they would enjoy the bus ride home Thursday night with a 56-45 overtime triumph over NCMC rival Kirksville. And they did it in convincing fashion, blanking the host Tigers 11-0 in the extra period.
“You don’t see that happen too often,” MHS coach Ed Costley said of the one-sided decisive stanza. “It was a good game. We were able to make baskets when we needed them and didn’t have many mental mistakes. We’re also playing good defense without much fouling.”
Mexico converted 16 of 20 foul shots, outscoring Kirksville by 11 points in that department. The Lady Bulldogs, now 14-6/7-1, shot 45 percent from the field, even though they missed connections on 11 of 13 shots from long range.
Kirksville scored on a wide-open 3-pointer with 2 seconds left to force overtime, but it was all Bulldogs after that. Freshman Brooke Costley finished with a career-high 24 points to pace Mexico and made five steals. Danielle Ingrum joined her in double figures with 13P/8R/2A/1S plus two blocks.
Other Mexico totals were Kelsey Creed 8P/2A, Erika Miller 6P/6R/3S, Klaira Ekern 5P/1R/3A/3S, Sherrell Cooks 3R/3S and one block and Becca Smith 3S.
The Lady Bulldogs resume NCMC play Monday with V/JV games at home against Hannibal.
MEXICO JV BOYS: They had to work overtime this year, but once again the host Bulldogs are champions of the Mexico JV Tournament.
Playing their third of four consecutive games in as many nights, the Bulldogs beat Fulton 56-49 Thursday at the MHS sports complex.
“It was a great win for the team. Keeping the JV trophy in Mexico means a lot to us,” MHS coach Tyler Hudson said. “Fulton plays seven juniors on their JV and we play two, so it’s always good for some of our younger guys to be in close games like this with older kids.”
Mexico led 7-4, 17-14 and 36-32 at the quarters before regulation ended at 46-all. Colby Willer scored 16P, Nick Jones 14P and Tyus Williams 11P for the 9-3 Bulldogs, while DJ Nunnelly added 6P and Dillion Jerichow 5P. Fulton fell to 9-2.
Boonville beat North Callaway 62-51 for third place. Zach Eads came off the bench to score 12P for the 10-3 Thunderbirds.

Shelby Curtis totaled 19P, Brittni Brandwein 16P, Pam Bertels 13P and Megan Gastler 9P for the Lady Trojans, who led 31-20 at the half. Ashley Curtis and Gastler both pulled down 9R, second only to 11R for Bertels. CR6 converted 23 of 36 free throws, Brandwein making nine of 12, while the Lady Bulldogs sank 14 of 20 foul shots. Berlyn Seitz paced SoCal with 18P. In the JV matchup, the Lady Trojans slipped to 5-3 after a 33-21 setback. Paige Harris topped CR6 with 7P. ... All four stepped up big on the defensive end and on the boards.” Lockhart finished with 11P/13R, Dunlap 9S and Gilliam 8R/5A. The Coyotes now stand at 14-4/4-1. ... Also home Thursday against L&C rival Westran, Paris girls rolled to a 71-26 triumph to move to 10-8/3-2. The Lady Coyotes, who connected on 26 of 54 shots from the field (including 8 of 16 from long range) while making 11 of 12 free throws, led 32-11 by halftime. “This was easily the most efficient, best shooting game we’ve had this season,” PHS coach Chris Willingham noted. “We also played a solid defensive game, forcing over 20 turnovers and converting those into several easy looks on offense.” For Paris, Paige Dye scored 15P, Tessa Henderson 14P, Amanda DeOrnellas 12P and Payton Gruber 10P. DeOrnellas also had 12R and three blocks. ... In the consolation semifinals Thursday at the Southern Boone Invitational, North Callaway boys routed Harrisburg 69-36 with the help of a 17-3 third period. Brendan Borman led the 10-7 Thunderbirds with 14P, while Keaton Oestreich and Zach Lavy added 11P apiece. Oestreich netted the game’s first nine points with a trio of 3-pointers. Reserve Dominic Perrigo led NorCal with 8R.
