Monday’s Games
MEXICO V/JV GIRLS: The Lady Bulldogs made 14 of 17 foul shots, but shot just 21 percent from the field and were outrebounded 38-24 in a 42-34 NCMC loss at Fulton.
Mexico led 12-8 after the opening period, only to trail 20-17 by halftime and 24-21 after three quarters.
“It was an ugly affair and our shooting percentages show it,” MHS coach Ed Costley said. “And scoring only nine points over the second and third quarters didn’t help either.
“They killed us on the boards, which can happen when you don’t shoot well. We live and die from the 3-point line, that’s what really has made us go the last couple of years, and this was like we were trudging in mud.”
With a lineup significantly different than two weeks ago, the Lady Bulldogs defended well against Fulton treys, allowing only two, but gave up 20P/20R to the Lady Hornets’ Corri Hamilton.
For the 11-7/4-2 Lady Bulldogs, who misfired on all 10 of their 3-point attempts, Kelli Ingrum totaled 10P/5R/1S, Klaira Ekern 9P/7R/3A/2B, Danielle Baumgartner 6P/4R/1B/1S, Remi Greenwell 4P/1R/1S, Anne Baker 2P/2R/1S, Kelsey Creed 2P/5R/3A and Cassie Schmidt 1P.
In the JV game, Mexico rode an 18-8 halftime lead to a 32-22 victory with Kaitlin Ingrum netting 8P, Kelsey McCubbins 6P and Karen Baker 6P.
Mexico continues NCMC play Thursday at home against Marshall.
MEXICO JV BOYS: The Bulldogs overcame a 23-17 halftime deficit to top host Fulton 43-34 and up their record to 7-0.
“We were getting bad rotations in the first quarter (18-9 for Fulton) and were having to foul,” MHS coach Tyler Hudson said. “They got to the free throw line and it got them going a little bit.
“After that, we fixed our issues and we were pretty good defensively the rest of the game. I was really pleased with our offensive execution in the fourth quarter.”
Mexico led 30-29 after three periods and outscored the Hornets 13-5 down the stretch. Jon Anderson totaled 15P/10R, Chance Davis 6P/5S/3R/1A, Kamden Ekern 5P/5R, Skylar Harrington 4P/7A/4S/2R, Matt Ridgway 4P/7R/3A/3S, Tyler Bracht 3P, Justin Webber 2P/4R, Christian McKeown 2P/2R and Cole Jaramillo 2P.
CR6 GIRLS: The Lady Trojans got a big game from Brittni Brandwein in a 40-30 win over Westran in the Sturgeon Invitational.
Brandwein hit four 3-pointers and converted eight of 10 foul shots en route to a game-high 26P. A 10-2 second period gave second seed Community R-6 a 19-9 halftime edge and the Lady Trojans followed that up with a 14-10 third period.
“We played a lot of different lineups and got all players involved,” CR6 coach Bob Curtis said. “We led from the tip and were ahead by 20 late in the fourth quarter.”
The Lady Trojans meet third seed New Bloomfield at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the championship semifinals.

Weekend Action
MEXICO G8 BOYS: The Bulldogs finished up a 12-3 A-team campaign in high style Friday, defeating West Junior 39-25 for first place in the Chester Boren Tournament at Centralia.
Mexico dominated from the outset, scoring 18 of the game’s first 20 points and leading 28-12 by halftime.
“This was a great ending to an excellent season,” MMS coach Darren Pappas said. “The key was how we got off to a fast start by playing pressure defense. The boys really fed off the turnovers they created and moved the ball until they found the open man.”
A balanced attack saw the following Mexico stat leaders: Brady Jacobi 8P/5R/2S, D’Milo Nunnelly 7P/3S, Malik Holman 7P/5A, Wesley Oetting 7P/3R and Markail Williams 6P/8R. By the time the third period ended, the Bulldogs led 34-17.
“This was our best played game on both ends of the floor,” the MMS coach noted. “This team continbued to show how balanced they are on offense and on any given night any player could be the leading scorer.
“It’s been fun coaching this team and I look forward to watching them compete at the next level,” Pappas said.
MEXICO G7 GIRLS: The Lady Bulldogs ended their season in tourney play also, taking third in the Mexico Middle School Tournament with a 30-12 triumph Saturday over Moberly. Mexico led 6-2, 18-4 and 20-12 at the quarters.
“It was great to conclude our season with a victory, although Moberly didn’t make it easy for us,” MMS coach Josie Stewart said. “They played us zone and sometimes we’ve struggled with scoring in that.
“But Morgan Bledsoe really stepped it up offensively, hitting several outside shots and defensively we did better at finding our man and not giving them easy looks at the basket. Consistent pressure forced them into turnovers and we were able to convert many of them into points.”
For Mexico, which closed its third win with a 10-0 stretch run, Bledsoe led the way with 12P. Sydny Hull had 8P, while Brooke Ransom, Paige Schutte, Taylor Brown, Makenzie Resa and Kronesha Belcher all had 2P apiece.
CR6 BOYS: Home Friday against EMO rival Clopton, the Trojans (8-3/3-1) prevailed 36-33 in a defensive struggle.
“We needed this win to stay in the conference race,” Community R-6 coach James Benson said. “It wasn’t our highest scoring game, but we stepped up when needed.”
Sean Wilson and Justin Durham accounted for the bulk of the CR6 points with 16P and 12P, respectively. Durham also had 6R, Wilson 4R, Clay Thebeau 3A and Aaron Fairchild 3S.
In the JV contest, it was the Community R-6 49, Clopton 21 as the Trojans led 13-2, 26-12 and 35-21 at the quarters. Shane Myers topped the 4-5 Trojans with 14P.
CR6 GIRLS: In another varsity pairing at Scott’s Corner, Clopton raced to a 31-10 halftime lead Friday and a 66-42 EMO nod.
“Clopton’s a really good team and anytime you shoot poorly and only have three field goals in a half, you’re going to lose to a team of that caliber,” Community R-6 coach Bob Curtis said. “The second half was a positive for our team, though, as we fought hard and finished the last 16 minutes outscored only 35-32.”
Brittni Brandwein made four 3-pointers to score 13P for the 6-6/2-1 Lady Trojans. Shelby Curtis added 11P and Paige Curtis 9P/9R.
NORCAL BOYS: Visiting Southern Boone outscored the Thunderbirds 39-19 after halftime for a 80-49 Mid-Mo win.
“SoBoCo’s a good team and we hit a cold spell that was the difference,” North Callaway coach Tim Turlington said.
With the game tied at 24 in the first half, the Eagles closed out the second quarter with a 17-6 run.
Nick Carlos of the 12-2/4-0 Eagles led all scorers with 31P. Zach Lavy had 15P/5R/4A and Zac Eads 10P for the 7-8/0-3 T-Birds.
Brett Metcalf scored 9P for NorCal in a 48-29 JV setback. In JV games Monday, Centralia girls beat the Ladybirds 43-10, while the T-Birds defeated Centralia 46-42 on Chance Kee’s 17P and 11 of 17 foul shots.
