Here are highlights from Saturday’s Mexico sub-varsity basketball outings.
MEXICO G9 BOYS: In the title game of the Mexico Freshman Tournament, Helias outscored the Bulldogs 14-0 in the first quarter en route to a 53-35 victory. Mexico won the third and fourth periods and got as close as 11 down the stretch.
Matt Ridgway had 13P, Kyle Whanger 11P and Jake Willer 5P for the 2-1 Bulldogs.
MEXICO G8 BOYS: At Hannibal, the Bulldogs bowed 52-20 after trailing 20-5 to start the contest. Tyler Warmbrodt led Mexico with 7P.
Still seeking its first win, Mexico plays Moberly at home Saturday in a rescheduled 10 a.m. start.
MEXICO G8 GIRLS: Also taking on Hannibal but at home, the Lady Bulldogs suffered their first setback in four outings in a 24-15 final. For Mexico in the A-game, Victoria Shaw totaled 5P/6R, Bailey Reed 4P/2S, Alexis Cunningham 2P, Mary Davis 2P/2S, Ashlie Woodruff 1P/3R and Mary Kate Shoemaker 1P/5R.
In the 2-quarter B-game, Hannibal won 10-8. Nobody scored more than two points for the Lady Bulldogs.
MEXICO G7 BOYS: In more action at Hannibal, the Bulldogs improve to 3-0 at the A-team level after a 42-23 decision keyed by pressure defense. Mexico scored 19 of the game’s first 21 points.
For Mexico, Skylar Harrington had 11P/5A, Cole Jaramillo 9P/5R, Chance Harper 9P/6R and Tyler Bracht 6P/3A.
The Bulldogs bagged the 2-quarter B-game 16-7 to stand 2-0. Cody Creed and Joseph Ochoa both scored 6P, Don Davis and Thomas Clay 2P each.
Mexico is home Saturday against Moberly for 11:45 revised action.
MEXICO G7 GIRLS: Here against Hannibal, the Lady Bulldogs broke into the win column by a 38-17 margin behind pressure defense in the A-game, making them 1-2.
Karen Baker had 14P/7S, Danielle Baumgartner 10P/5R, Abby Dick 8P/4R and Haley Test came off the bench to record 4S.
Mexico claimed the abbreviated B-game 26-7. Kelsie McCubbins had 8P, Whitney Fecht 6P and Montesha Burton 6P/3S.
