Mexico High School varsity basketballers completed their next-to-last week of the regular season Friday at NCMC rival Moberly, playing a pair of close calls at Moberly Area Community College.
The state-ranked Bulldogs got off to an 8-2 start but needed a 17-9 finish to down the Spartans 44-39 prior to the next day’s district seeding meeting at Mexico. The Lady Bulldogs went down to the wire in a 41-40 setback.
MHS V BOYS: Ahead 15-11 at halftime, the Bulldogs fell behind by as many as nine points in Moberly’s 19-12 third quarter which included a 15-2 run.
“We cut it to three by the end of the third period and had a really good fourth quarter,” MHS coach Brennan Scanlon said. “We put a lot of our younger kids on the floor in the third quarter and they gave us a spark.”
Among those key contributions were a Matt Ridgway tip-in and a big 3-pointer by Cole Jaramillo, he noted.
Jake Willer topped the 19-4/8-2 Bulldogs with 11P. Jake Anderson added 9P, Tyus Williams 7P, Austin Reed 5P, Kyle Whanger 4P, Jaramillo 3P, Jon Anderson 3P, Ridgway 2P.
Mexico is home twice this week. Boonville makes a V/JV visit Tuesday, then Fulton pays a JV call Thursday and a V date Friday to conclude NCMC play.
Friday will be Senior Night for Mexico boys and girls.
MHS V GIRLS: This contest was even more of a nail-biter with the Lady Bulldogs calling a timeout with 5.8 seconds to go and getting off a shot that bounced off the rim as time expired.
“This was a good game but it was tough to come out on the losing end of a game like this,” MHS coach Ed Costley observed. “But I thought we played well in many respects and if we can continue to play strong and have a good week, we should be ready for district.”
Today’s V/JV trip to Boonville has been moved to Wednesday, then like the boys Mexico has a JV home game Thursday with Fulton and a V home date Friday with Fulton in league play.
Ahead 13-9 after the initial period, the Lady Bulldogs saw Moberly go ahead 26-21 by halftime. Both teams netted nine points in the third quarter and Mexico’s 10-6 stretch run, featuring a pair of Kelsey Creed treys, fell just short.
“We were down 38-30 in the second half but were able to get back in it,” the MHS coach remarked. “We battled back and put ourselves in a position to win, but we missed seven layups in the fourth quarter, four of them point-blank, and that was truly the difference.”
Mexico’s defensive efforts limited the Lady Spartans to a single 3-pointer, but Moberly outscored the 13-10/6-4 Lady Bulldogs 10-7 at the foul line and outscored them 18-10 in the paint.
For the Lady Bulldogs, Creed and Brooke Costley shared high-point honors with 11P apiece. Kelli Ingrum added 7P, Klaira Ekern 5P, Danielle Baumgartner 4P and Brittany Griffin 2P.
Other Mexico stats included Creed 4R/2A/1S, Costley 4R/4A/3S, Ingrum 1R, Ekern 8R/3A/2S, Baumgartner 6R/1A/1B/2S, Griffin 2R/1A, Anne Baker 1R/2A, Remi Greenwell 1R/1A/1S.
