It wouldn’t take much for the Mexico Bulldogs to bring an undefeated record into this week’s home football opener against Winfield. But, for a second straight week, the Bulldogs couldn’t get over the hump Friday night in a 15-14 varsity road loss against NCMC rival Marshall.
Taking over at the Owls’ 9-yard line after a fumble recovery, the Bulldogs needed only three plays to snap a 7-all tie as Shia Miller broke tackles on an 8-yard run and Austin Reed kicked the extra point with 7:09 left in the third quarter. Miller also scored from 12 yards out and Reed added the PAT late in the first period.
Starting at their own 11 some 50 seconds into the final period, however, the Owls (1-1/1-0) made good on a pair of fourth-and-one calls  to keep a long drive alive, then came up with a 5-yard scoring pass and conversion run to take a 15-14 lead with 4:24 remaining.
Mexico had one last opportunity to turn the tables, starting its final possession at its own 30. Reed completed five passes on the march before the Bulldogs (0-2/0-1) ran the clock down to 6 seconds. But Reed’s 29-yard field goal attempt went wide left, allowing Marshall to take a knee as time ran out.
“We had our chances and played a competitive game. We just need to finish and we’ll by OK,” MHS coach Devin Brown said. His squad fell 21-19 at Hillsboro in Week 1.
The Bulldogs will be home for three of the next four contests with a trip to Centralia in that mix. Ahead just 21-14 at halftime, Winfield rolled to a 52-27 final at home over MMA.
