With the regular season having ended, for better or worse, Mexico High School basketball squads join five other North Central Missouri Conference schools this week in deciding who survives their Class 4/District 8 tournament at Moberly Area Community College.
Play begins today with Moberly the top seed and Mexico second in both the boys and girls divisions.
The only NCMC team not assigned to the Moberly district happens to be Fulton, which split a varsity doubleheader Friday night at the MHS sports complex. Mexico girls came out on top 67-28, while Fulton boys went home with a 73-56 victory on Winterwarming 2010 and Senior Night.
With both Moberly and Mexico getting byes in each bracket, post-season play for Mexico begins Wednesday with the girls in action at 7:30 p.m. and the boys at 9 o’clock.
Berths in the March 3 sectional at Jefferson City will be decided Friday at 6 and 7:30.
MEXICO GIRLS: In sweeping the season series from Fulton, the Lady Bulldogs dominated once again. That made Mexico 17-7/10-2, good for second place in the NCMC behind 12-0 Moberly. Mexico led 21-4, 43-15 and 61-26 at the quarters to drop Fulton to 5-19/3-9.
“We shot well, got a lot of transition baskets and a lot of points off turnovers,” MHS coach Ed Costley said. “It was a good sendoff for the team and the seniors.”
Danielle Ingrum and Erika Miller shared high-point honors for Mexico with 16 points, Miller making eight of 10 free throws. Erin Slay and Kelsey Creed had 10P apiece, Brooke Costley 8P, Klaira Ekern 3P, Delaney McNeil 2P and Becca Smith 2P.
The Lady Bulldogs will start postseason play against the winner of tonight’s Kirksville-Hannibal game.
MEXICO BOYS: Except for the second quarter, Fulton held the upper hand, beginning with a 17-11 first period and ending with a 26-19 fourth. The Hornets led just 25-23 at halftime, but outscored the Bulldogs 48-33 in the second half.
Verdis Lee netted 30 points, Wilson Christensen 15P and Cameron Krull 10P to fuel the Hornets, who improved to 19-6 and 8-4, tying the 17-8/8-4 Bulldogs for second place in the NCMC behind Moberly. Nineteen of Lee’s points came in the first half; Christensen scored all but one of his in the second half.
For Mexico, Dillion Shoemaker led the way with 11 points and five rebounds. Austin Reed added 8P, Kurt Loyd 7P, Tyus Williams 6P, Sam Kelly 5P, Colby Willer 5P, Marcus Bush 4P, Regan Mudd 3P, JaKarr Curtis 3P, Ta’Juan Williams 2P and Scott Barker 2P.
The playoff debut for the Bulldogs will be against the winner of tonight’s Hannibal-Boonville game.
MMA: The Missouri Military Academy basketball Colonels posted their fourth victory of the season Thursday night in Centennial Gymtorium, downing Winfield 40-30.
“It was a great game for us,” said MMA coach Lt. Toby Henry. “Our boys played the best they have all year. We have learned to play as a team and we are almost ready for district.”
Sophomore post Jared Roberts led the Colonels in scoring and rebounding. Senior guard Robert Carrillo and junior wing Derek Kantorski played strong defense.
NorCal boys: Friday at Mid-Mo rival Tipton, the 13-9/5-3 Thunderbirds won 60-43 in their best game of the year. Brendan Borman scored 17P, Jake Lasley 17P, Keaton Oestreich 11P and Dominic Perrigo 8P.
