NORTH CALLAWAY: An unsuccessful bid for 2 extra points cost the previously unbeaten Thunderbirds a 27-26 setback Friday night at Kingdom City against Bowling Green. Both teams made 4 turnovers and now stands at 4-1.
Travis Karhoff’s 4-yard touchdown with 55 seconds remaining gave North Callaway the choice of going either for the win or the tie. Karhoff’s conversion run failed, however, and the Bobcats covered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock.
Bowling Green scored twice in the fourth quarter on TD passes of 8 and 44 yards from quarterback Ryan Cox to Cody Spegal. The last came with 2:06 remaining in regulation.
The T-Birds opened the scoring with Kyle Ward’s 3-yard run at 8:46 of the first period, followed by an Andrew Attebery PAT. Cox and Spegal countered with a 35-yard scoring pass some 3 minutes later and the Bobcats took a 13-6 halftime lead on a short run with 36 seconds to go.
Dominic Perrigo gave NorCal a shot in the arm, returning the second-half kickoff 81 yards into the endzone. The other points for the T-Birds also came in the third quarter on a 19-yard deflected pass from quarterback David Heileman to a falling Karhoff in the end zone, plus another Attebery kick.
Cox completed 20 of 42 passes with 2 interceptions for 265 yards, helping Bowling Green post a 317-193 edge in yards total offense. Sam Magruder and Zach Beamer each had 11 tackles for North Callaway.

NORTH CALLAWAY: The Ladybirds finished second Saturday in the Centralia Invitational after bowing 2-0 to defending Class 2 state champion Palmyra in the title game.
North Callaway, now 11-5, started the meet with a 3-1 win over Mexico in 8 innings, then handed Centralia just its second setback with a 6-1 decision in the semifinals.
Kayla Haley was NorCal’s winning pitcher against Mexico, striking out 9, walking 1 and allowing 8 hits in going the distance. Caitlyn Vore and Becca Spencer both went 2-for-4 for the Ladybirds, while Megan Kelsay had 1 of NorCal’s 7 hits plus 2 RBI.
Against the host Lady Panthers, Spencer threw the win, striking out 3, walking none and giving up 6 hits. Spencer also went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and a solo homer in the third; Meagan Thurman (2 RBI) and Brittany Karhoff were 2-for-3 also in NorCal’s 7-hit attack.
North Callaway entered the championship game with 2 starters out due to injuries. Palmyra snapped a scoreless tie with a homer in the sixth and added another run in the seventh. Spencer suffered the loss, striking out 3, walking 1 and allowing 5 hits; Thurman had the only hit for the Ladybirds.

CENTRALIA: The Lady Panthers opened their own tournament with a 13-3 win over Cairo as Jennifer Mills struck out 7 and Jenn Lauer collected 3 hits plus an RBI.
In the third-place contest, Jordyn Tolliver threw a 4-hitter, fanning 6, as 16-2 Centralia defeated Hallsville 6-2. Morgan Creel and Mills both had 2 hits and an RBI for the Lady Panthers.

COMMUNITY R-6: The Lady Trojans exited Saturday’s Montgomery County Invitational with a 7-8 record after a split gave them the consolation championship.
The Lady Trojans dropped an 8-0 decision to Silex in their first game, then bounced back for a 15-0 decision over Christian High, followed by a 9-0 triumph over Montgomery County.
Against Christian, Brooke Evans went 3-for-3 with a double, triple, 2 RBI, 3 stolen bases and 3 runs scored for CR6, while Ashley Curtis was 3-for-4 with 2 doubles, 3 RBI and 2 runs scored and Lena Uebinger 2-for-3 with 3 stolen bases, 2 runs scored and a walk.
Ashley Curtis pitched 1 inning, striking out 1, and Shelby Curtis threw 3 innings, fanning 2.
Against the host Lady Wildcats, Samantha Thomasson was 2-for-3 with a double, 2 RBI and a sacrifice for Community R-6 and Courtney Arens 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base.
Ashley Curtis struck out 10 in the 7-inning contest, walking 1.
Bowling Green won the tournament title with a 3-2 victory over Silex.

PARIS: Home Thursday against L&C rival Marceline, the Lady Coyotes gave up a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings in a 4-1 loss.
The lone run for Paris came in the fifth, thanks to a walk and 2 sacrifices. Pitcher Kayla Redmon had the only hit for the Lady Coyotes, a single with 2 out in the sixth.
