MOBERLY DISTRICT: While the top two seeds in each division enjoyed the night off, the Class 4/District 8 basketball tournament got under way Monday at Moberly Area Community College.
Mexico girls begin post-season play at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday against Kirksville, followed by Mexico boys taking on Hannibal at 9 in another semifinal matchup.
Quarterfinal scores from the all-NCMC district were girls Boonville 59, Marshall 19 and Kirksville 53, Hannibal 29, plus boys Kirksville 52, Marshall 49 and Hannibal 79, Boonville 61.
Wednesday’s other pairings will be Moberly vs. Boonville girls at 4:30 and Moberly vs. Kirksville boys at 6.
Both Moberly squads are seeded No. 1 and both Mexico squads No. 2. Girls finals will be Friday at 6 p.m., followed by the boys at 7:30. Winners compete March 3 in the Jefferson City sectionals.
Following are the seeds in place this week.
Boys: 1. Moberly, 2. Mexico, 3. Hannibal, 4. Marshall, 5. Kirksville, 6. Boonville.

CR6 GIRLS: A fast start to both halves Monday carried the Lady Trojans to a 43-30 home win over EMO rival Winfield. Community R-6 scored 12 of the game’s first 15 points, led 22-18 at the half and 29-19 going into the final period.
Brittni Brandwein paced the 13-9/4-3 Lady Trojans with a game-high 15P, making a pair of 3-pointers. Pam Bertels added 10P and Paige Curtis 8P; Ashley Curtis and Bertels also pulled down 8R.
PARIS BOYS: The state-ranked Coyotes suffered a rare setback Friday, falling 67-50 at L&C rival Salisbury.
The Panthers led 19-12, 35-23 and 44-37 at the quarters before posting 23 of the game’s last 36 points. Paris played without all-stater Jon Gilliam.
Matt Koenig paced Salisbury with 32 points. Cole Lockhart had 19P/9R and Tyler Dunlap 13P/4A for the 17-5/6-2 Coyotes.
PARIS GIRLS: State-ranked L&C rival Salisbury had too much firepower for the visiting Lady Coyotes, who fell 71-51 Friday to a state-ranked foe. The Lady Panthers led 43-25 by the half with Paris unable to close the gap to single digits.
“We played well the second half, but they were on their game offensively,” PHS coach Chris Willingham said. “For us to compete this late in the season at their place shows our improvement.”
For the 12-9/4-3 Lady Coyotes, Amanda DeOrnellas totaled 20P/13R and three blocks, while Tessa Henderson added 15P/4S/3A and made two 3-pointers.
NORCAL GIRLS: Home against Mid-Mo rival Hallsville, the Ladybirds couldn’t match the opposition’s height or point total, bowing 58-46 Monday.
North Callaway (6-18/2-7) cut a 14-1 deficit in the first quarter to 14-12 early in the second, but trailed 22-19 at the half. The Lady Indians (20-4/8-1) rebuilt their lead with a 16-9 third period.
For the Ladybirds, Megan Williams hit a pair of 3-pointers and totaled 12P, KK Meyer made three shots from long range to score 11P and Morgan Brown-Emmons added 10P. Kelsey West had 5S for NorCal. Hallsville won the JV game 37-18.
