While prep mat meets no longer always end with the heavyweight matches, there’s no doubt having Josh Harlan back in the lineup serves as a boost to Mexico High School wretling fortunes.
“Josh made it back to the mat again and looked like he never missed a beat,” MHS coach Nick Hoth said of his senior 285-pounder, who returned to action after a football injury to help the Bulldogs claim a 46-33 victory Thursday over Centralia at the MHS sports complex.
Harlan, always a top contender in whatever meets he enters, be they regular season or post-season, scored a second-period pin over John Veazey. That was one of three pins for Mexico (Jake Vitale, 145, and Sinjon Adams, 182, had the others) to go with a decisive four forfeit victories, good for 24 points.
“Anytime Mexico and Centralia get on the mat together, it makes for an exciting night,” the MHS coach noted. There was no JV match.
“It was nice to see us wrestling and competing as a team,” Hoth continued. “I feel we are starting to peak at the perfect time.”
The Bulldogs get their first weekend off in 2012 before resuming NCMC competition Tuesday at Boonville. Mexico will take a record of 5-2 overall and 2-2 conference into that contest.
The only remaining home date for the Bulldogs before the Feb. 10-11 district tournament will be Jan. 31 against NCMC rival Fulton.
“Josh has still been a great leader in both football and wrestling while injured. When they called his name for the prematch intros, you could feel the excitement from us coaches to his teammates to the fans in the stands. Everybody was excited to see him back,” Hoth noted.
“With him in the lineup now, and Sinjon Adams and Monterio Burton both back and healthy. things seem to be falling into place at the right time for us. If everyone can continue to stay healthy, we should be able to make another run this year at the state tournament.”
