MEXICO G9/10 BOYS: Home Thursday against West Junior, the Bulldogs pushed their record to 8-1 with a 56-34 victory after leading 15-4, 30-11 and 42-19 at the quarters.
“Once again, we had everyone contribute positive minutes,” MHS coach Tyler Hudson said. “Cole Jaramillo really got us going early and everyone fed off that. We relaxed a bit in the fourth quarter, but we were able to regain our composure and finish the game.”
Jaramillo, a freshman, paced Mexico with 24P. Then came Skylar Harrington 7P, Chance Harper 6P, Kamden Ekern 5P, Christian McKeown 4P, Austin Logerman 4P, Tyler Bracht 3P, Bryce Hopkins 3P.
MEXICO G8 GIRLS: A 50-20 loss to host Centralia in the third-place game Thursday of the Chester Boren Tournament  marked the end of the season for the Lady Bulldogs.
“We had a tough schedule in the sense the majority of the teams we faced had either just one loss or only a small number of losses,” MMS coach Cindy Allison said. “Most of the time, we were going up against excellent teams game in and game out. We struggled, but hopefully that game experience will help us in the long run.”
For Mexico, which trailed 34-6 by halftime after Centralia struck for 19 of the game’s first 25 points, Katelyn Smith had 10P, Carly Abbott 4P/8R, Paityn House 2P, Rachel Owings 2P and Shyann Eordon 2P.
“I definitely saw improvements throughout the year. The girls were very coachable and always played hard and battled, regardless of the score or game situation,” the MMS coach observed. “
MEXICO G7 BOYS: Making their debut in the Mexico Middle School Tournament, the Bulldogs bowed 42-13 to Hannibal on Thursday after trailing 10-4, 19-8 and 35-9 at the quarters.
“We came out fired up and played with high intensity, which helped keep the game close in the first half,” MMS coach Brandon Schafer said.  “I was very impressed withow the boys played under heavy defensive pressure throughout the game.”
Scoring for Mexico, which plays Warrenton at 11:15 a.m. Saturday for third place, were Isaac Troy with 7P, Miguel Vega 3P, Caleb Robertson 2P and Chris Campbell 1P.
MEXICO G7 GIRLS: Hannibal bested the Lady Bulldogs 29-18 Thursday in the first round of the Mexico Middle School Tournament.
“We started off very slow offensively and struggled in transition defense, giving Hannibal some open looks at the basket,” MMS coach Josie Stewart said. “Hannibal had 10 points before we ever scored a basket. The second half, we played with a lot more energy and improved tremendously both on offense and defense. This was our third time playing Hannibal and I felt like it was our best game.”
For Mexico, which plays Moberly at 10 a.m. Saturday for third place, Brooke Ransom and Sydny Hull each scored 4P, while Kayla Scobee, Paige Schutte, Taylor Brown and Morgan Bledsoe added 2P apiece. Kronesha Belcher and Amber Shaw each had 1P.
CR6 GIRLS: Thursday at Louisiana, the Lady Trojans prevailed 45-38 with the help of an 8-4 start and an 18-12 finish.
“It was nice to get back in the win column after a tough week last week,” Community R-6 coach Bob Curtis said. “We didn’t shoot the ball well from the field, but we got to the foul line and made 18 free throws.”
Brittni Brandwein of the 6-5 Lady Trojans led all scorers with 19P with a pair of treys. Paige Curtis added 9P/7R and Shelby Curtis 6P.
VAN-FAR GIRLS: Kasey Gatson totaled 21P/5R/5A for the Lady Indians in Thursday’s 37-25 victory over Mark Twain in the Palmyra Invitational.
MMA/NCAL BOYS: Jared Roberts had another big game Thursday for the host Colonels, netting 30P, but North Callaway cruised to a 70-48 win by scoring 17 or more points in three of the four periods.
The Thunderbirds evened their record at 7-7 behind Zach Lavy’s 23P/6R/4S/11A; he also made a trio of 3-pointers. Justin Murphy added 11P for NorCal, which led 31-23 at halftime.
NORCAL GIRLS: Home Thursday against Mid-Mo rival Southern Boone, the Ladybirds saw reserve Mariah Peace score her first five points of the season in the clutch, a 2-pointer to tie and a 3-pointer at the buzzer for a 47-44 win.
Down by 15 in the second half and with two players fouling out early in the fourth quarter, North Callaway still was able to improve its record to 11-4/2-1 with a 20-4 stretch run that included making nine of 10 foul shots.
For the Ladybirds, Jaida Gray went 10 for 14 at the free throw line en route to 14P; Maddie Sorell added 11P/7R and Tara Oberlag 9P after making seven of eight foul shots.
