Unranked though they may be this week, Mexico High School basketball boys didn’t let that minor slight slow them down Tuesday night.
The Bulldogs played host to non-league rival St. Charles in a 6:30 varsity-only start. Shortly after 7 o’clock, the handwriting was on the wall.
Mexico posted its 40th victory in 45 outings over last season and this season, one of the top runs in MHS history and all the more remarkable because the Bulldogs lost four starters between campaigns.
The lone starter back, senior guard Austin Reed, was in fine form against the Pirates with a game-high 22 points. That included six 3-pointers, four in the first half to spark 14-3 Mexico to a 32-13 halftime lead over 9-9 St. Charles in a 59-38 final.
Reed had plenty of support as the Bulldogs bagged their third straight win and eighth in their last nine contests. Jae’on Nunnelly and Tyus Williams added 12P apiece, Kyle Whanger 6P, Jake Willer 3P, Nick Jones 2P and Jake Anderson 2P.
“We played really well the first half before St. Charles started hitting some shots in the second half,” MHS coach Brennan Scanlon said.
“We’ve got a good eight-man rotation going right now and we just need to get better. If we get better as individuals, we’ll get better as a team.”
Baskets down low by Whanger and Anderson snapped a 9-all tie late in the opening period and the Bulldogs never looked back. Reed’s trey with less than 10 seconds to go closed out the first half.
A Willer layup along the baseline made it 43-17 midway through the third quarter for Mexico’s biggest lead of the game. St. Charles never got closer than 16 down the stretch.
The Bulldogs hit the road for their next two dates, a V/JV trip Friday to NCMC rival Marshall, then Sunday’s conference clash with Fulton at 8 p.m. at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, part of the MFA Oil/Break Time Shootout.
MEXICO G9/10 BOYS: Down 12-4, 27-15 and 44-32 at the quarters, these Bulldogs found a way to win 55-52 Tuesday here vs. Jeff Junior.
“We came out really flat and against a good team that makes things tough,” MHS coach Tyler Hudson said.
“In the second half, we really got after it and I think it wore on them. When the fourth quarter came around, we started to get a lot of steals and turnovers and that allowed us to get back in it.”
For 9-1 Mexico, Skylay Harrington netted 18P, Cole Jaramillo 13P, Tyler Bracht 9P, Kamden Ekern 9P, Christian McKeown 3P and Austin Logerman 3P.
CR6 BOYS: Making their Sturgeon Invitational debut, the No. 2 seed Trojans beat New Bloomfield 66-37 Tuesday.
“Everyone contributed to this win; we had a lot of players step up,” Community R-6 coach James Benson said. “Cameron Dubbert played extremely well with a double-double and our pressure was great.”
Justin Durham had 13P, Dubbert 12P, Sean Wilson 11P and Clay Thebeau 11P for the 9-3 Trojans. Dubbert also had 10R, Durham 8R, Wilson 5A, Austin Layman and Wilson 4S.
The Trojans play third seed South Callaway at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the championship semifinals.
NORCAL BOYS: Justin Murphy made a layup with 1.5 seconds to go Tuesday, then clinched the outcome with a steal as the visiting Thunderbirds overcame shooting woes in the first three quarters for a 46-44 win over Russellville.
North Callaway shot under 30 percent before a 21-9 edge in the final period evened its record at 8-8. Zach Lavy, who assisted on Murphy’s decisive basket, totaled 16P/10R/3A; Jacob Haubner added 10P/8R/5S and Murphy 6P.
The T-Birds dropped the JV contest 51-43 despite Brett Metcalf’s 11P and Justin Menard’s 10P.
