Mexico High School’s latest fall sports reports include a 4-3 home loss to NCMC rival Kirksville in softball plus a 2-0 road win over Elsberry in boys soccer Tuesday.
In addition, MHS athletic director Mark Buffington has announced that the Lady Bulldogs’ season-opening volleyball date Thursday with Kirksville has been moved to Mexico with the Sept. 21 V/JV meeting switched to the home of the Tigers.
MHS SOFTBALL: Kirksville scored a run in the third, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to claim a varsity victory at Gallop Field.
Tessah Shaw (1-1) threw all seven innings for Mexico, which did all its scoring in the third inning.
“We played with very high intensity,” MHS coach Christina Gerber noted. “When we stepped onto the field, it was time to play and that’s what we did.
“We put the ball in play, made things happen in the third and played some tight defense,” she continued. “Playing a team the caliber of Kirksville this early in the season was a great opportunity for us. We hope to continue to improve from here.”
Danielle Ingrum led off Mexico’s only scoring inning with a double. Anne Baker then reached on an error and Ingrum scored.
Lexie Abbott also reached base on an error. Marissa Brown singled to right field, scoring Baker, and an error on the play allowed Abbott to score as well.
The Lady Tigers won the JV game 14-0 on a no-hitter. Victoria Shaw and Alex Cunningham were the only Mexico baserunners, thanks to walks.
MHS SOCCER: In a varsity-only debut, the Bulldogs won with Josue Lopez scoring once in each half and Jesus Rivera getting an assist on the second goal. Logan Ray made 11 saves for Mexico, which put 12 shots on goal.
“Unable to scrimmage with two full sides, it was good to play a game and see what we can do,” MHS coach Chris Hotop said. “Our back line of Sean Kelly, Jared Smiley, Alex Hobbs and Jose Hernandez played well in front of Logan in goal. When we made mistakes defensively, we recovered and kept them from scoring.”
