On Thursday, Dec. 14,, at approximately 10:23 a.m., the Mexico Public Safety Department (MPSD)responded to the 100 block of Morris Street in reference to a fire at the Mexico Animal Shelter. Responding personnel found an outside wall burning and fire in the attic. MPSD, Shelter staff, and numerous volunteers got all the animals out of the building and found places for them to stay temporarily. Around 30 dogs and cats were safely removed. The fire was contained and extinguished with the south portion of the building suffering significant fire damage and the north section suffering smoke and water damage.
There were no injuries from the incident. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. City staff are working to resume animal control and shelter operations as soon as possible.
