The tracks will then be laid from her to St. Louis. This news is from an authoritative source. ... Mexico brick are being shipped to the Panama Canal zone. “With prospects of a ‘good year’ coming up, Chamber of Commerce President Lawrence M. Barnes told his membership last night that Mexico had nothing to fear for the immediate future. But looking ahead to foresee ‘a shrinking rural population and a more or less static industrial employment,’ he asked the Hotel Hoxsey Gold Room diners at the annual banquet, ‘Isn’t it time to get off the coattails of our present industries and do something for ourselves?’ The incoming president gave his message at the annual installation dinner.”

“Two flocks of geese have been spotted this week by Pauline Henneberry on Sunrise Road. ... Mexico’s Port Authority is putting in a bid to play host to the America’s Cup competition on either the Town Branch or Mark Twain Lake. Who could forget the marvelously successful Soybean Festival Regatta, staged annually by the MPA? MPA figures the primary competition for the 1990 event will come from Hawaii, Newport, R.I. and San Diego. Economic impact: $1 billion.”

“Decision day is here, and the waiting game is over – finally. Mexico High School senior Dedrick Harrington, an all-stater in football, basketball and track for the Bulldogs, announced today he will continue his education and gridiron careers at the University of Missouri in Columbia, making Tiger fans happy as well as himself. The long-awaited announcement came at an 8:30 a.m. news conference in the MHS sports complex lobby, where the 6-foot-4, 220-pounder spoke before a group of family and friends. A hot subject on recruiting websites for months and in area media of late, Harrington had been rated the 44th-best prospect in the nation by ESPN.”

The Yesterday In Mexico column is published daily in The Mexico Ledger. An expanded column is published on Fridays.
