“Quite a number of our citizens have expressed a fear that in case of another cold spell, the fire plugs in the business portion of the city might be frozen up in case of fire. Kennen Hulen of the Fire Company and Councilman Ballew of the Third Ward have tested all the fire plugs in the business part of Mexico and report them all right. ... Today was Ground Hog Day. The ground hog saw his shadow and went back into his hole, and that means that we will have to buy more coal.”

“Jimmy Bybee, who at the age of 15 has had 10 years experience as a ‘country and western’ musician, has been signed to two contracts with the Grand Ole Opry of Nashville, Tenn., his mother said today. The son of Mrs. Florence Bybee, 402 N. Jefferson, will make personal appearances with Grand Ole Opry road shows and will record two of his own songs. Jimmy, a high school sophomore, has composed numerous country music songs such as ‘Old Pal for Christmas,’ ‘Memories of You,’ ‘Gal from Tennessee’ and ‘Your New Love.’ It will be a couple of these he will record. Jimmy formerly was a carrier for The Ledger.”

“Jonquils and daffodils are poking their heads out of the ground around town. Better watch out; they may get frost bitten. ... Gold finches and chickadees are frequenting area feeders, loving those thistle and sunflower seeds. ... Groundhog Day means that opening of trout season is right around the corner. ... Another entry in the motto contest: ‘Mexico, Mo. – A Past To Remember; A Future To Mold.’ ... A robin has been spotted by Alma Dean in the backyard of her home at 506 Kentucky. Is spring really that far away? ... Now showing at Cinema III: ‘Fire-Walker’ with Chuck Norris and Lou Gossett, ‘The Morning After’ with Jeff Bridges and Jane Fonda, plus ‘Heartbreak Ridge’ with Clint Eastwood.”

“The Mexico High School faculty has announced its Students of the Month for January. They are seniors Elizabeth Shoemaker and Ryan Belcher. The Student of the Month program is an effort to bring recognition to outstanding youth at MHS. Students are nominated and selected by the faculty. Achievement, citizenship, scholarship and leadership are the basis for selection of Student of the Month. Students are nominated monthly by teachers in the high school and then are screened by a panel for selection as Student of the Month.”
