Mexico Superintendent of Schools Tina Woolsey announced her resignation, effective June 30, 2012, to the Board of Education Tuesday night.
Woolsey, who was hired as assistant superintendent of schools in 2005, was named superintendent in 2007. She is currently in her 22nd year as a Missouri public school educator and leader.
"It has been a joy to work with the people of the school system and the community," Woolsey said. "I am submitting my resignation now to provide the Board of Education ample time for the process of determining who will serve as the next superintendent."
Woolsey said she is proud of the success of the students, and the progress the district has made in the past seven years. Under her leadership, the buildings in the district received major energy-efficiency upgrades following the passage of an $8 million bond issue by patrons in 2009. The district also constructed a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Tornado Shelter at Hawthorne Elementary School.
A new school, the Mexico Education Center, was established in 2007 which serves as an alternative high school for students to continue their education and earn a high school diploma. Woolsey also developed the week-long new teacher workshop for the district's new employees.
Under her leadership, the custodial and maintenance departments were re-aligned with Mitch Ridgway as director, to ensure cleanliness and quality of building upkeep. Also, the central administrative offices were consolidated with the transportation department in the Mexico Industrial Park following the sale of the Hardin campus to the Presser Performing Arts Council.
Woolsey said she plans to take a year, to travel with her husband Doug. "I plan to take some time to rest, relax, reflect and finish my doctoral work," she said. "We also plan to invest time in our eleven wonderful grandchildren."
