Mexico hosts five games Saturday

The Second Annual Gary Filbert Classic was a huge success as Mexico hosted five high school games on the Gary Filbert Court Saturday.
Glenda Filbert, Filbert's widow, and Laura Filbert, his daughter, had opportunities to speak to the audiences about the benefit of raising money for the Audrain County Relay for Life.
In the first contest of the day No. 1 in the state Silex Lady Owls playing No. 33 in the state Sturgeon Lady Bulldogs. The Owls defeated Sturgeon 58-46. Silex was led in scoring by Natalie Fleming who poured in 30 points, while Ashley Brown added 11 points for the Owls. Sturgeon was led in scoring by Maddie Embree with 19 points and Phoebe Hesser added 10 points for the Bulldogs.
The second contest of the day featured the Sturgeon Bulldogs and the Community R-6 Trojans. This boys contest was won by the Trojans from Community R-6 as they defeated Sturgeon 46-35. Lane Thebeau and Sean Wilson paced the Trojans in scoring with 12 points apiece, while Clay Thebeau added 9 points for the Trojans. Sturgeon was led in scoring by Brayden Kelly with 10 points.
The third contest of the day featured the Helias Crusaders defeating the Pacific Indians 56-44. The Crusaders were led in scoring by Brock Gerstner with 16 points and Isiah Sykes added 15 points. The Indians were led in scoring by Cullen VanLeer with 21 points, while Tanner Brown scored 11 points.
The fourth contest of the day featured the Mexico Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Crusaders from Helias. The Lady Crusaders defeated the Bulldogs in a hard fought game by a score of 56-45. The Lady Crusaders were led in scoring by Taylor Hagenhoff with 21 points and Bre Zanders added 16 points. The Lady Bulldogs were led in scoring by Brooke Costley with 15 points, Remi Greenwell with 13 points and Karen Baker with 11 points.
The final contest of the evening featured the Mexico Bulldogs hosting the Warrensburg Tigers. The Bulldogs defeated Warrensburg 50-34 in a hard fought defensive battle. Jake Willer led the Bulldogs in scoring with 12 points, followed by Jaeon Nunnelly with 11 points. Dakota Jones led the Tigers in scoring with 13 points.
