It took a miracle shot to end the Bulldogs season.
 
Almost five minutes into the second overtime period of the opening round in the Class 2 District 6 tournament in Moberly, with the score knotted at 1-1, Spartans striker Chris Coonce drove a free kick over Mexico’s wall. The ball wobbled and dipped, smacking into the corner of the net, beyond the reach of goalkeeper Brock Smythe.
 

Van-Far R-1 announces basketball game regulations

As a result of the continuing pandemic the Van-Far School District decided to set new guidelines limiting the number of spectators at home basketball games for the foreseeable future.

Each Van-Far student athlete will be given three passes to give to family or friends to attend games. Staff members will be permitted without a ticket, but there will be no “plus one” allowed until further notice. And there will be a lottery drawing for each game with 30 student tickets and 10 community member tickets.

Postseason run ends at Hannibal

Mexico used all their available tools on Friday night in Hannibal. Quarterback Ty Sims spread the ball to four different receivers and broke free for a 54-yard scamper. Meanwhile the backfield of Dante Billups, Isaiah Reams and Anthony Shivers constantly pounded the Pirates’ defense.

“I felt like we could move the ball,” observed Bulldogs’ lineman Kendyr Taylor. “But they sure are a good team.”

Mexico, Community R-6 runners compete at state meet

Five runners from Mexico took on a crowded and speedy field in the Class 4 state cross country meet held Friday at Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia.
 
Junior Thomas Peuster put in the best showing for the Bulldogs. He crossed the line in 18 minutes, 40.10 seconds, which put him 107th. Senior teammate Tyler Quinlan followed in 131st place in 19:09.60.
 

Billups, White top all-conference list

Dante Billups gains yards. A lot of yards. And he often does it while carrying defenders on his back. Michael White hits hard -- like a truck wearing a number 5 on its hood.
 
Both Mexico football phenoms earned spots on the North Central Missouri Conference all-conference first team list.
 

McKeown, Frazier named to conference soccer first team

In a tough conference stocked with soccer talent, several Bulldogs stood out this season. The North Central Missouri Conference released its All-Conference teams this week, which included Mexico’s potent scoring tandem of Dominic McKeown and Haden Frazier on the first team. McKeown is an attack-minded midfielder who is also a corner specialist. Frazier can score with his legs, but also is solid in the air.
 
Daeye Miller and Randy Hernandez, midfielders adept at setting up the attack and stalling the opposition, picked up second team nods.

Van-Far falls to Montgomery County in district play

The Montgomery County Wildcats were too much to handle for the Van-Far Indians in a Class 2, District 5 quarterfinal game on Oct. 30.

The Indians’ season ended at 1-7 after losing to the Wildcats 47-20 at MCHS’ Jim Blacklock Field. Van-Far, the No. 6 seed in the six-team district tournament, was eliminated in the district quarterfinals for the sixth consecutive year.

Mexico, Fulton wear out scoreboard as Bulldogs prevail 59-42

William Dobyns defined Friday night’s district opener in one word: “Offense.”

It might seem obvious, considering the Bulldogs outpaced Fulton 59-42, running back Dante Billups racked up 194 yards and three scores on the ground, quarterback Ty Sims threw for 101 and the Hornets’ Courtland Simmons pummeled Mexico with 190 yards rushing and another 126 passing.

But two of the plays instrumental in the final outcome were defensive – sacks by Quinton Campbell and Shannon Dorsey – and one on special teams.

Five Mexico runners heading to state; Hoyt qualifies for Trojans

Five Mexico cross country runners will be competing at state thanks to strong performances at Saturday’s Class 4, District 4 meet held in Washington. 
 
The Bulldogs had three girls qualify led by Kalea Hennberry who placed 13th in 23 minutes, 54.90 seconds. Also qualifying for state were Anna Fairchild (14th, 23:57.40) and Sidney Turlington (15th, 23:58.40).
 
Two boys also are going to state. They are Thomas Peuster (11th, 19:14.30) and Tyler Quinlan (12th, 19:17.30).
 
All five runners also earned all-district honors.
 

Czerniewski inducted into Missouri Sports Hall of Fame

Eric Czerniewski was at work on Sept. 22 when he received a memorable phone call from Jerald Andrews, president and executive director of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
The Montgomery City native found out he was selected as a hall of fame inductee. 
“I fell off of my feet when he told me the news,” Czerniewski said.
