Prior to Fridays Eastern Missouri Conference varsity boys basketball game at Community R-6, North Callaway head coach Matthias Miller and team were on the precipice of playing four games in five days.
Despite the fact that might seem like a crossing a proverbial minefield, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For the athletes, all those games without a single practice is the gift that keeps on giving. Coaches, on the other hand, probably prefer a little more discipline, but when CR-6 head coach got 23 points from Bobby Jett, 14 points from Cordell Hollensteiner and 10 points from Blaze Escamilla against the Thunderbirds he was more than happy to take the hard-fought 58-52 league victory.
"This was a great team win. We put different guys in double figures which makes us much harder to guard," said Community R-6 coach Matt Thomas. "I thought defensively we did a really good job on their drives and not allowing them to get paint."
North Callaway, on the other hand, it used the 14 points and four steals it got from Dawson Wright for the contest to takle a 27-20 lead at haalftime after getting outscored 14-12 in the first quarter. When the T-Birds then got outdone 22-12 in the third, they spent all of the fourth trying to mount a comeback that featured Tanner Pezold's 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists on the night, but they fell short at 16-13.
North Callaway, 2-6 overall, 0-2 EMO, was at Fayette on Monday and is at South Callaway on Tuesday.
Community R-6, 3-5 overall, 1-2 EMO, hosts Marion County on Tuesday.
