In its initial home meet of the 2017-18 season, the Mexico varsity boys golf team hosted Centralia and Hannibal on Wednesday, and while Gage Gilmore did tie for seventh as an individual with a score of 49, not much else went the way of the home squad.
For example, while the Bulldogs shot a respectable 218 for the day, Centralia was lights out with 174 and Hannibal split the difference at 190. Individually, Centralia's Tanner Brandow and Nic Brooks were first and second with a 40 and a 41, Hannibal's Preston Bennett and Gabe Falconer came in third and fourth with scores of 43 and 44 and the Panthers Carson Flick was fifth with a 46.
Wesley Redington of Centralia was next in sixth with a 47, Hannibal's Gabe Keesey also had a 49 to tie Mexico's Gilmore for seventh and Josh Paubel and Hayden Rice of the Pirates both charted marks of 51 to tie for the ninth spot.
"For this being our first match of the year I think we had a decent night of golf. We have a bunch of beginners who are learning quickly and picking up the game as they go," said Mexico coach Dwight Loyd. "Gage Gilmore was the only player for the Bulldogs to place in the top 10."
Mexico is at Arthur Hills for a non-conference matchup with California on Monday.
