There are plenty of things Missouri Military Academy varsity football head coach Mitchell Jenkins and his staff simply can't control.

Very few people in his position have to deal with the numbers issues he does, and when you add to that the lack of access to players he gets in the offseason the challenge only grows. But, when you also figure in the fact there are former military officers who still hold rank today because of the military school format waiting for Jenkins to walk off the field so they can evaluate his job performance, a lesser individual would wilt under the pressure and heat of those circumstances, but not Jenkins.

Instead he chooses to take those elevated expectations and make them work to his advantage by expecting more from everyone around him. That includes every last player on the roster, each and every coach and even the occasional team manager and school adminstrator.

"Our team will compete for 48 minutes. We will always work to improve all areas of our game every week," said Jenkins.

Last year MMA used three different quarterbacks, the third of which was Pedro da Rocha, who led the team to a record of 1-9 overall. Since then he has graduated and received prefered walk-on status at Garden City Community College in Garden City, Ks., top-ranked National Junior College Athletic Association program.

Some of the other players this program lost to graduation after the conclusion of the 2017-18 campaign include Copleand Grahman, who earned himself a scholarship to play offensive line at Texas Weslyan, and fellow offensive lineman Charlie Norman.

Jenkins did get some good news in the form of some talent that's new to the varsity that will help increase this teams overall numbers. The only bad news is that this trio is all seniors, but Jenkins is still happy to have the help. This includes running back Clark Gookin, offensive lineman Jacob Laure and defensive end Cross Mallicoat.

Now entering his third year with the Fighting Colonels, Jenkins is 5-14 overall so far. Most recently the team was in St. Louis on Friday for a Jamboree at Gateway Tech.
