The Missouri Military Academy varsity boys soccer team has generally been one of the school's top program's, but in recent year's the squad hasn't been able to get the footing it needs based on the fact the leadership hasn't been consistent.

Now that current head coach Liam Collins is heading into his second season the Fighting Colonels can continue to take to his style of play, which he described earlier this year in the preseason as defensively aggresive while offensively allowing players to express themselves. MMA actually started the season last Saturday with a trip to face St. Charles Lutheran in the first round of the Fort Zumwalt East Tournament and was victorious 6-1.

After that the Colonels had to get ready for challenges such as hosting Kirksville on Monday before playing at Fulton on Sept. 3 and Southern Boone on Sept. 5.

"We played a lot of very good competition early in the year before a lot of our players who ended the season as starters were eligible," said Collins. "This is common in boarding schools and a situation we are used to."

The unique nature of this situation generally lends this team to getting better as the year progresses for a wealth of different reasons. For Collins the end result of this was an overall record of 11-8 last season, which is also his career record as a high school coach in the United States since 2017-18 was his first at MMA.

"Offense will be a strength and defense, including goal play is quickly improving," Collins said. "Everybody will get a chance to contribute."

One set of losses Collins will annually be trying to account for will come by way of graduation. He'll also always have a new class of incoming freshmen who, hopefully, will represent the longterm future of the program. The here and now is a much different story tht consists mainly of returning players.

This includes Joao Cruz Souza, Bruno Pozzani, Kenny Kazoora, Zeth Colin, Miguel De La Mora, Griffin Henry, Gabriel Velasco and Robert Abbott.
