Now that the 2018-19 Missouri State High School Athletic Association postseason tournament is just about a week from getting underway, the Mexico varsity volleyball team took an evening to recognize its three upperclassmen at home on Monday.
This included Payton Bledsoe, outside hitter/defensive specialist Megan Azdell and German exchange student Amelie Scharschmidt. All of that came just before the Lady Bulldogs hosted Hannibal in North Central Missouri Conference competition and lost in two sets, 25-19, 25-9.
"Senior night consisted of three seniors, two on varsity, a right side and a libero, and one on JV," said coach Shayla Cox. "In the first set we started out very strong. The girls were excited and communicating. We had a few miscommunications and things we mesed up on and then we started getting frustrated with themselves and it slowly started to spiral downhill from there. The first set was definitely better than the second one. After we lost that initial communication we never found it again."
In the action leading up the the varsity the JV lost in two sets. The freshman/C team also got a chance to take the court against the Lady Pirates and while they may have fallen in three sets not only was Cox happy to see them get a chance to get on the floor, but she also liked what she saw once they did.
"This was really good for them. They haven't had a ton of games over the season because not everybody has three teams," Cox said. "It was a close one, so that was good. In the JV game I really thought we were going to pull out that second set, but we couldn't hold on."
The Lady Bulldogs next hosted Boonville on Tuesday and on Thursday Mexico ends the regular season at Fulton, both of which are league matchups.
