DEKALB, Ill. – The Red Team posted a 22-10 victory over Black in a very competitive Northern Illinois University Wrestling Red/Black Dual in Victor E. Court on Thursday.
"These guys competed tonight, said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. "While it's against each other, we were looking for that competitive fire, and that drive, we saw a lot of that tonight. We were able to surprise each in some regards. What I expected was a lot of tightly contested bouts and that's what we saw tonight."
The Red team opened the scoring as Bryce West (Solon, Iowa/Solon) posted a 3-1 victory over Carlos Champagne (Griffin, Ind/Marion Catholic [Ill.]) at 125/133. Bryce's brother Drew extended the Red team's lead to 6-0 following his 3-2 with over Caleb Brooks (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) at 133.
Red continued its fast start at 141. After a scoreless first period, Anthony Cheloni (South Elgin, Ill./Marmion Academy) controlled the second by riding Alijah Jeffery (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) the whole period. Cheloni took a 2-0 lead in the third on a reversal and with a point for riding time, he scored a 3-0 win to extend Red's lead to 9-0.
McCoy Kent (Modesto, Calif./Enochs) turned in a dominating performance at 149 defeating Anthony Gibson (Westland, Mich./John Glenn), by major decision, 15-5, to give the Red team a commanding 13-0 advantage.
Black got on the board at 157 when Mason Kauffman (Stratford, Wis./Stratford) defeated Zackary Valesquez (Ione, Calif./Ponderosa) in overtime. After the two grapplers battled to a 1-1 deadlock through four periods, Kauffman took a 2-1 lead with an escape in the second overtime period. He was able to maintain control of Velasquez in the third overtime period to win the match and give the Black team its first points of the match.
The match at 165 also went into overtime after Caden McWhirter (Prattville, Ala./Prattville) and Kenny Moore (San Diego, Calif./Hoover) were deadlocked, 2-2, after three periods. Moore then scored a takedown in the first overtime period to win, 4-2. Moore's victory cut Red's lead to 13-6 with four matches left.
The Black team's rally continued at 174 as Brit Wilson (Mexico, Mo./Mexico) scored a 14-5 major decision over Hayden Krein (Sparta, Wis./Sparta) to cut the Red lead to 13-10. Red regained control of the dual when Andrew Scott (Holly, Mich./Holly) defeated Michael Aldrich St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South), 3-1, with a takedown in overtime at 184. The Red team took a 16-10 advantage into 197.
Red kept the pressure up at 197 as Gage Braun (Springfield, Ohio/Graham) scored a 3-2 victory over Max Ihry (Naperville, Ill./Waubonssee Valley) of the Black team and extended Red's lead to 19-10. Caleb Gossett (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) completed the Red victory with an 8-1 win over Terrese Aaron (Mexico, Mo./Mexico) to give Red a 22-10 win.
The Huskies open the 2018-19 campaign Saturday, Nov. 3 when NIU travels to East Lansing, Mich. to compete in the Michigan State Open.
