Because the Wellsville-Middletown varsity girls track team has just two girls, not only did they have to compete as individuals throughout the the regular season, but the duo had to do the same at the state meet.
Once junior Lucy Schnitker and senior Hannah Slovensky got to the Missouri State High School Activities Association championships they were well within their element, though, and it showed in the results as they came in 52nd and 80th, respectively. The way they qualified for this event was by finishing in the top 15 at districts.
The Tigers other seven athletes at Oak Hills Golf Course for the Class 1 championships represented the boys squad and were led by Keaton Mayes and Mitchell Canterbury. Layne Norris and Isaac Seabaugh, also did their best to represent the black and yellow, as did Hayden Colton and Jacob and Jason Hollensteiner.
It wasn't that long ago that head coach John Slovensky started this program with very few athletes and little hope of ever being able to compete as a team. Just several years later and the progress this squad has made in such a short time is quite impressive. But, just like every program, if the hard work stops so will the positive results.
